I have all confidence that many of you know this.  Tonight we finished Ch. 5 of E. Nesbit’s “The Railway Children.”   We don’t know for sure what war is being referenced:  “When the war came, some of the Russian prisoners were allowed to volunteer as soldiers.”  The book was published in 1906.  Our history knowledge fails us, and we are very curious.

    Thanks!

I haven’t read the book, so not sure…. Is the book based in England?

Maybe it was the Boer War?  That was 1899-1902 (ish) with England

(This was the war in which Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the creator of Boy Scouts, was involved, most notably in the Siege of Mafeking.)

It was referencing the war between Russia and Japan in 1904 as far as I know – that is what I have always heard. Blessings, Linda
