My 8 year old dd is reading Heidi and loving it. She asked me the other day who is this “latter” that keeps coming up in the story. It took me a second to understand, and then I realized. I laughed so much! It was kind of hard to explain though. 🙂
The word latter is used a lot in this particular story. I am so glad my daughter asked, what a confusing thing if a young reader doesn’t understand.
Oh, that’s funny. That happens here, too, but what happens more often is that I will be reading aloud and come upon a word I think needs some explanation. Then, all too often, the next sentence in the book pretty much explains the word I just interrupted to explain….and the kids sort of look at me like, “Well, Mom, why did you bother to explain that to us??!!!” And I have to say, “Oh, pardon the interruption.”
Hehe that’s cute. And Sue, I do the SAME exact thing you described. I often explain when the explanation was right around the corner, if I had just waited.
It is so tempting to explain every little thing to my kids, but then I remember that I rob them of curiosity which makes it interesting and memorable to them.
My dd asking such a little thing reminds me of the importance of this. 🙂
