First of all, hello to all of you. I am a mom of four and am so appreciative of all I have learned over the last year and a half about the CM methods and curriculum specifics from so many of you. You have blessed my life and therefore the lives of my children greatly! Most questions have been answered for me, so I have not had the need to post before now. My question today is about “The Harvester”. Do you recommend it? My DS really enjoyed reading Freckles by the same author, and picked this one up today at the library. Any reviews would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
How old is your ds? This book is really a romance. It’s about a man who rescues a woman and brings her to live with him. She is ill and her past life was really hard. He doesn’t touch her, just takes care of her, but it is emotionally pretty intense. There is a lot of dwelling on the man’s thoughts as he loves her and wants a full relationship with her but she is not ready yet. There is nothing really inappropriate, but as I said, emotionally intense. I love Stratton Porter myself, but my kids have never developed an interest.
My son is 14…he’s not at all interested in romance as of yet…or even interested in pondering it to be honest. I did read a few reviews on another site, but couldn’t make a decision on this one. Thanks for your help. This may be a book I’d enjoy more than he would right now. He really did enjoy Freckles, perhaps another choice would be better? Perhaps Laddie or Girl of the Limberlost? Thanks again! gwen
Yes, to my mind Laddie would be enjoyed by many young people–it is often a book read in childhood and never forgotten. My own favorite is Girl of the Limberlost, but have never managed to convince my boys to read it as it’s about a GIRL. LOL I love it, and Laddie as well, and can easily see these being enjoyed by a young man if he doesn’t mind reading books with girls as principal characters. Freckles and Limberlost are related in that there is a bit of continuation of characters, so it might be a natural next-read.
