OK so we’re only just starting chapter 3, but I’m feeling rather “meh” at best about this book. I just can’t get into it. I’m trying to act positive, but ugh. I asked my kids what they think of it and I get an unenthusiastic, “It’s good.”
Does it get better soon? lol Did you just love it?
BookwormParticipantDid not love it. We did finish it, but then I did not read it to the next “batch.”
crazy4boysParticipantI really liked it. The 2 boys that read it said it was ‘okay’. But they say that about pretty much everything that it isn’t Pokemon or Minecraft.
missceegeeParticipantI didn’t read it, but dd13 did and ds10 is currently as part of module 1. Dd enjoyed it, but it wasn’t a favorite. Ds likes it ok. Dd would prefer Mara, Daughter of the Nile for this genre, I think.
4myboysParticipantMy son didn’t much care for it. I thought it was OK. I’ve not decided whether or not my younger son will read it next time around. Worry about it when I get there I guess.
MelissaBParticipantI didn’t read it, but my daughter didn’t care for it when she had to read it.
mycupoverflowsParticipantIt sounds like mine may be the dissenting opinion, but my son and I enjoyed it. We used it as a read-aloud last year when he was 10 and although it is pretty slow at times it ends up being exciting, at least to my son it did. I still find him curled up with it every now and then, reading it on his own. Just our experience! 🙂
csmammaParticipantYes, we loved it! I would suggest hanging in there. My boys and I have very fond memories of the book –especially in regards to Ranofer’s character. We talked about this one for weeks after we finished it as a read-aloud. IMHO, it definitely gets better! It’s all worth it in the end, just be sure to have Kleenex nearby ;).
RobinPParticipantI don’t remember a lot about this book since I read it with my now 23yo many years ago. But I do remember that we enjoyed it very much. My taste in living books may have changed since then. If you’re not enjoying it, it’s fine to ditch it but if you’re early into it, I might hang on a little longer.
petitemomParticipantWe did like it a lot! My sons were 9 and 11.
Mysterious Lady in PinkParticipantWell the split decision leaves me debating, lol, but I greatly appreciate the replies. I am picking up Mara later this week from the library so maybe I’ll compare. It is encouraging to hear some of the strong positives though, once again confirming that books touch individuals in different ways.
And on a tangent, I always feel bad when I post a question, get some lovely replies, then I don’t post for days to at least thank people for their input. I usually check in on my phone (like now), which is too time consuming to type on compared to a full-size computer keyboard. But I always enjoy reading the forum, even if I don’t say much most of the time or follow up on posts in a timely manner. 🙂
artParticipantWe did like Mara better (it was more exciting), but we were sad when Golden Goblet ended. I love being sad when a book ends. I would definitely read both if I had time.
Alicia HartParticipantMy dd loved it – read it in a couple of days but we have not read Mara, Daughter of the Nile.
BrambleParticipantDid you keep going? I almost gave up on that one, but we were so glad we stuck with it!!
Alicia HartParticipantOkay, my dd almost 12, fiinished Mara, Daughter of the Nile and said that she liked it better than Golden Goblet. She said, “Mara was a lot more exciting than Golden Goblet, but Golden Goblet was a really great book too!”
