Have any of you seen the book The American Story by Jennifer Armstrong?  It would be the perfect book for the history coop class I’m teaching as it’s filled with 100 short tales about famous people and events in American history EXCEPT!!!!! it is SO LIBERAL that there’s NO WAY I can use it for fear that all the parents will withdraw their kids from my class.  How disappointing!  Anyhow, I’m hoping that some of you may have come across this book and are familiar enough with the style to offer a suggestion of a reasonable alternative.

    Thanks!

I really like that book too. Since the stories are so short, perhaps you could read them yourself for ideas and then re-tell the story in your own words in class?

There is a book by William Bennett that is similar called the Children’s Book of America, but it is not as extensive – there’s no where near 100 stories. Also, there are two books, Stories of Great Americans by Edward Eggleston and America First by Lawton B. Evans that have great true stories that are short.

I looked at The America Story too, and just couldn’t bring myself to read it to my kids. And I’m usually not real uptight about that sort of thing. 🙂 I think you would really like the books I mentioned above.

What age group are you referring to in your co-op?

BTW, the problem with America’s public education is books like The American Story that Progressives have been working on since the early 20th cen. and the radicals/liberals from the 60’s moved into education or government.
