We are looking to relocate to Texas. We have visited Texas many times, but know that it’s one thing to visit and another to live. We are leaning more toward North Texas and would appreciate any feedback on areas within an hour from Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Thoughts on Frisco would be helpful too.
I live in Houston, and my in-laws are in the mid-cities (the small cities between Ft. Worth and Dallas). So I’m not an expert, but somewhat familiar. What kind of info are you looking for?
Heather and pslively,
Thank you for responding! We’d like to know more about the church culture and proximity to shopping, outdoor activities, etc. What are the people like? Homeschool opportunities? Conservative or liberal? Really anything that you can share would be helpful. Also, We are not opposed to the Austin area, so any thoughts there would be good too!
We live in the Sachse/Wylie/Garland area, and we love it there. There are lots of different homeschool groups in the area. There’s probably something for everyone; it just depends on what you are looking for. I will link a few that I’m familiar with:
All of those links are groups that would be within reasonable distance from Frisco, but I’m sure there are many groups within Frisco proper. There are also MANY Classical Conversations groups around.
Texas is very homeschool friendly. I’ve been homeschooling for over 20 years and I don’t think I’ve ever had a negative comment from anyone. My son had speech therapy through the local school district and they were never anything but wonderful to us. In short, I’m pretty sure there’s not a better state in which to homeschool.
People here are very friendly. We lived in Colorado for a few years, and were amazed by the difference in the people there. They just weren’t friendly at all compared to what we were used to.
In our area, people are quite conservative. Austin is a different story. Austin is beautiful and I love it, but it definitely has a different vibe. Not bad, just different. If that’s what you’re looking for, you should certainly consider Austin.
There are churches everywhere. We go to a Reformed Baptist church in Wylie.
I hope that answers some of your questions. Let me know if you’d like to know something specific.
I live East of Dallas, about 30 min. from downtown. There are a lot of homeschooling groups here. There are a lot of homeschoolers here and it has been easy for us to connect. There happens to be a lot of homeschoolers at my church ( and homeschooling veteran moms). I think you will find homeschoolers in whichever city you pick. And Christian educators Resource Center is great and the bookstore has great prices!
