Hi! I was just wondering if folks use the tests as tests with Apologia Science. We’re going to be starting Exploring Creation with General Science next week. When I first looked at the material I was overwhelmed – not because I don’t know science (I’m a certified geek!), but because I can see that this is a huge leap from the Exploring Creation with Astronomy that we did last year. I think the hurdle of getting our son not to freak over the increased workload will be enough. Getting him to study for tests, well…
What I’m thinking of doing is using the tests as study tools – give him open book tests so that he can dig up the information. Of course, if he would get anything wrong I’d have him go digging again until he found the correct information. Does anyone else do this with this curriculum?
This is exactly what we did when our oldest ds transitioned over from Jeannies books to General Science. I too thought it a HUGE leap (and I’m not a certified geek ).
We had our ds narrate most of what he read, fill out the study guides and complete the tests all open book. We had him go through the 7th grade (General Science) and 8th grade (Physical Science) Apologia courses this way.
However, this year he’s beginning the Biology course; We’ll have him complete the study modules and take the tests with CLOSED book – only to better prepare him for college testing…. which is inevitable .
Hello! We went from the elementary books to this one also. My dd takes the tests with no problem, although she doesn’t look forward to it. Her Analytical Grammar tests are also “open book” and I like that option for that subject. I think open book tests are a good idea, it really helps them learn to search for answers when they need to know something…I may have to rethink how we do Apologia…
My two oldest transitioned with no problems, but I have reservations when my 11 yo (Asperger’s) ds will start General Science a year from now.
What I’m doing this year is to prepare him for the more complicated work by doing Zoology 3 for half the year, then the new Human Anatomy for the second half of the year (we’ve only been doing one book per year). And then we he starts General Science I’m going to have him narrate instead of the tests or maybe add in the tests later as he gets more confident. I really love the idea of open book tests, too, which I think takes all the fear factor out of the test and they can just enjoy learning for the sake of learning. And I’m sure he will remember more this way.
Thank you all for posting. Yes, I think that it’s more important to learn how to find information you need than to stress out over memorizing just for the sake of a test. I think the information “sticks” better that way. And I have to be honest – one of the reasons our son was so excited to get back to CM was no tests. I’d hate to take that away from him
Thanks again for your responses!
Linda
