Another website that advocates the CM method of education uses/recommends a 9 week term; 8 weeks of scheduled CM education and a flex week to finish up anything that hasn’t been completed during the term and to help cover the unexpected (for when life happens and school as planned, does not). I really like this idea of a shorter term as it is much easier to plan for 2 months and stick to it rather than 3 months. The longer the term, the more likely we are to have interruptions. Has anyone else tried a 9 week term, or something other than the 12 week term recommended on this site? How did it work for you? Pros/Cons? Can the Hist/Geo/Bible curr guide by SCM be easily broken down into a diff. term length, or does that really mess with the continuity/flow of the lessons? TIA
I forgot to ask…. I can’t afford to purchase all materials that we will be using through out the year at one time. Can anyone tell me what specific resources are needed for term one of the Gen.-Deut. and Ancient Egypt module? I saw the books list for this study, just couldn’t not find if/where the resources were broken down by term. -Thank you, again.
If you download the sample pages of Gen.-Deut. it should list the Term 1 books. I like to buy our books a little at a time as well.
We broke our year into 4 quarters this past year and it worked fine. I don’t think there is anything magical about 12 week terms. Just keep in mind that the history end-of-term exam questions won’t be until week 12 of your history lessons. You could possibly move them up to week 9, or just go through them when you get to week 12.
Thanks, Holly! I don’t know how I missed that :-/. I got it all printed out and aprx prices from Amazon and SCM, respectively. I was looking at the Term 1 at a Glance, pg 14 Week 2 Lsn 6 and it mentions Job under Bible. However, on the daily lesson plan/schedule (pg 19) Job is never mentioned. Am I looking at the schedules incorrectly, missing something, or is there a misprint?
To answer your original question, yes here in South Africa our school terms run differently. We have four terms, of ten weeks each. I have tweaked many different curriculum, including SCM to fit into it. It is really no big deal. Make the terms work for you, your family, your unique needs.
When the children were younger I never took any heed of school terms. But now they make plans to see their friends during holiday time, go camping, visit farms, so we stick to that schedule. The government schools will school for about 200 days.
I find a 10wk term works well. My children show signs of tiredness by week 9, and we can just pull through, and get a break.
Our school year runs Jan-Dec. Our longest holiday is over Christmas, over 1 month in length. As it is S.Hemisphere, it is our summer, and many families head off to the coast. In my home, we start school for the new year nearest the first monday in January, because of my illnesses I put “money in the bank” in advance, in case I am sick during the year. I am sometimes tempted to cut the holiday even shorter but I feel like a meanie.
