My husband just got a job offer near Knoxville, TN. Are there any CM moms in that area? Also, are there any recommendations for housing in that area?

    Thanks and God bless,

I’m in that area! Although, I’m more eclectic than full CM. However, a new CM group has just started in Knoxville (Powell to be exact, 15 minutes or so from “technical” Knoxville). It only has about 8 or 9 so far but word is getting out. The ladies that run it are full CMers. It meets once monthly.

Knoxville, generally speaking, is a great place to live! I recently overheard 2 men in the grocery store talking. Apparently they had both lived in PA and had known each other years ago. They both retired and found it funny that they had both picked Knoxville to live! It truly is a family friendly place. The homeschool community is pretty big and busy! I’ve lived here all my life so I may be a little biased. 🙂 Not sure if it makes a difference but Tennessee Vols Football is HUGE here since Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee. Go Vols!! Plus, we’re a stone’s throw to the Great Smoky Mountains which is amazing! Great camping!

As far as housing goes, it depends on what you are looking for. Are you talking about area of Knoxville? If so, West Knoxville is more expensive but considered a better area of town (west Knoxville toward Farragut). I live in North Knoxville (a community called Powell, TN as it’s “technically” out of city limits). Where I live is a pretty good area also though it is expanding and changing. I’d like to warn you and label some, in my opinion, not so good areas but I wouldn’t want to offend in case there are other TNers on the forum. You can PM me and I would be glad to give you my opinion. 🙂 We live in a subdivision but would love to get a house on some land, which is possible here but financially we can’t right now.

There are some urban areas but also alot of rural farm areas. It just depends on what you are looking for. 🙂

    Hope that helps,

    Britney

Welcome to TN, Amanda! Knoxville is a great place. We were just there yesterday although we live a little further east. My sil and family also live in Powell (and go to Britney’s church, I believe.). I don’t know anything about CM in that area but am thrilled to know there is a group starting! We have a fabulous group here that meets every six weeks.

Anyway, just wanted to extend a welcome.

RobinP also runs a HUGE children’s library of living books, so it might be worth joining if you’re close enough.

We spent 6 months there 4 years ago, and we still want to go back very much. We lived in Maryville because my husband worked at the Knoxville Airport which is south of Knoxville. It is more expensive I think, but so very nice. We would go back there in a heartbeat. I’m jealous! It’s just a beautiful and friendly place–safe too as far as crime goes.

Yes, Robin, I believe you told me that some time ago. Though, I’ll admit, I forgot their names!

Overall, I wanted to say again how great a place Knoxville is to live! Welcome!

Thank you, ladies, for all of the information. We are really excited to move into the area. We are trying to find someplace for my husband to live while I stay here and sell the house.

I will have to hunt up RobinP’s library of living books! What a treat that will be.

I may be checking back with you to ask you about certain areas that are best for safety!

    Blessings!

I don’t know about other areas, but Maryville is extremely safe. The last time I checked there were only 4 sex offenders in the whole county! There are three times that in my neighborhood where I am now. I think there was a murder the year after we were there and it was a real shock. I’m sure there are other areas that are safe too. But this is the only place I was. It is pricey though. The food is expensive. The housing is about like where we are, so I don’t know if it would be expensive compared to where you are. Also, the sales tax in TN is high and there is sales tax on food; but no income tax I think.

Do you know if there are any 1 bdrm places for rent for my husband to stay in in that area? Thanks.

Rentals are hard to find, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. You can’t really find anything on zillow or any real estate website. Going there in person and talking to a realtor is good. But here’s a link to the newspaper rental ads.

    good luck
