I’m hoping maybe you can help me with a problem I am having. Last week we added a router to my computer in order to set up an additional computer in our homeschool room. Since then the SCM website runs as slow as a snail. 😕 All the other websites are loading normally. Do you have any thoughts as to why this may be happening? Is there a setting that I need to change?
I am finding that the SCM website is loading slower also. Not snail slow but slow. I was wondering if it was just my computer..but then all other websites are at normal speed. I haven’t changed anything with my computer but I am jealous of the router ALL4Purity…I am wanting to get one for our two computers. I just haven’t broken down to buy one.
My IP address is 98.208.137.69. The Book finder and my Organizer are loading a little slower than normal, but it’s the SCM homepage and forum which are REALLY running slow. It’s taking about a minute to load. (As I write that I realize how spoiled I am with High Speed Internet – I picture Charlotte Mason saying, “You’re upset because you have to wait 1 minute to get the information you need?! Why in our day we had to walk 3 miles in the snow to the Library!” LOL!) But anyway…back to the 21st century..I know that something isn’t right and it happened simultaneously with my router install. Any advice is appreciated. If not, I’ll call my computer guy.
Dear Shelly – I know, I’m so excited to have two computers. In the past, everytime we wanted to check something online we’d have to leave what we were doing and go to the other side of the house where the computer is. (Hmmmm…I think I heard Charlotte Mason rebuking me again!) 😮
I have the same problem, but have had it for a long time. It tends to take about 10+ seconds for it to record a “finished” item. All other sites run fine, so I am clueless as to why. Does it make a difference if I have lots of books listed?
@richpond, I highly recommend getting that router as soon as you can. It’s the very best first step to protect your computer from hackers and automated viruses coming in. If you have a Windows based computer, broadband Internet, and no router then you are playing with fire. Sorry for the bad news. 🙁
@all4purity, The good news is that I didn’t find any specific problem with your address. It could just be some of our general slowness here. You could test it by trying it again briefly without the router then you would know if that had something to do with it. If you call in your computer guy it would be useful to have him do a traceroute to simplycharlottemason.com and e-mail me the results: doug [at] simplycharlottemason [dot] com.
Be sure to let us know if you find out anything useful.
@caroline4kids, Yours is a different situation since it’s the CM Organizer rather than the main site. The Organizer runs on a totally different server. What kind of Internet connection do you have (dial-up, cable, DSL, satellite, etc.)? What Web browser software are you using (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, etc.)? What operating system is your computer running (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, etc.)?
@Everyone else, Sorry about things being a bit slow in general. I’m trying to track down the cause.
Doug, so the router helps with preventing viruses and hackers?? I thought it was just so I can have two computers on line at the same time…as you can see I don’t know much about technology and my DH doesn’t either.
Ok, since you are the guru..does it matter about which router I choose. I went to Wal-mart to just browse and I saw one for $35 or so and then some for $60-70. Does it really matter? My two computers are in the same room (our living room) so it wouldn’t have to be a strong signal and our house is only 1700sq. ft. so even if we did move a computer at some point it wouldn’t be very far. Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated. 😀
by the way we also have Best Buy and HH Gregg..in town..so I do have other options besides Walmart.
I am running on Windows XP with IE and a cable connection. Is there a browser that runs better? I have safari and foxfire on here, but don’t usually run them.
@richpond, The router does make it so you can connect more than one computer to your Internet connection at the same time. But every router sold today also includes a firewall that gives you a lot of protection from things coming into your computers.
As far as type of router, it depends on what wireless standards your computers support. There are various speed standards, etc. It’s best if you can find a local smart friend to help you out. 🙂
@caroline4kids, IE is the slowest, buggiest, non-standards compliant, and most insecure of the main browsers. Almost anything else will help. I personally like Safari and Firefox 3. We do support IE version 7 and up for the CM Organizer because it’s the most used browser, but it always gives us the most trouble.
Hi, I cant get into the bookfinder it says it cant display anyone else having same problem? and the rest of the sight is slow too, just wondering if its my issue or the web’s, all other sights are running fine, thanks billiejo
Hi , Yes for some reason last night i was able to get into the bookfinder and still can today. The sight seems to be faster today too, Thanks so much ,billiejo
