I need some ideas for teaching writing to my then 7th grade daughter next school year. She has a language-based disability, including receptive, expressive, and dyslexia. She loves to write letters and will even attempt to write a story, but she has not had formal lessons. Her thoughts jump all over the place, so I would like to help her put her thoughts in order before she writes even a casual letter to a friend. We have been basically doing copywork, partly because she has such poor spelling, and also for helping things to ‘stick’ better, e.g., Scripture and some things from character lessons. She has been doing Winning With Writing which will teach some of these things I am looking for, but I was looking for other ideas, maybe from someone with a child who has the same difficulties. What beginning writing programs would be good for our situation? Or, is there some way for me to teach her this without a formal program. What I was thinking about doing was recording her oral narrations and then write it down for her, and have her copy it. But, that is not teaching her to put her thoughts in order. Is there something I am missing before beginning a formal writing program? Maybe I am jumping ahead too far. I’m just not sure how to proceed, but I do know that she now needs more than copywork.
