I am thinking of switching one of my girls to Teaching Textbooks.  We have been using Math U See and I have been happy with it, but my youngest DD8 has caught up with my oldest DD10.  She was caught up by the end of last school year.  We have taken a break from MUS and have been working on Rapid Recall because my oldest just isn’t very quick at her math facts.  We will be done in 3 weeks and ready to start our math books.  I am thinking that my oldest will have a better confidence level to not have her sister in the same program and ahead of her.  My youngest is ahead of her in everything!!  Very frustrating for the oldest.  We will be starting Delta, which is division.  I am thinking that it is my oldest that I should switch.  I wondered if the spiral math would help her by returning to things more often.  She seems to catch onto math quickly and learn it but then after supposedly mastering it, she forgets.

Do you think the sprial method might help her?  Where should I start her, at the beginning of grade 4 or part way through where it starts into division?  Do you think Teaching Textbooks would be a good fit?  For those that use it, do you prefer to just use the computer or do the workbook? Why?  I wish I knew exactly what would be the best fit for her, help her the most, and build her confidence.  There are so many choices that it is sometimes overwhelming!!  Thanks for your thoughts.

It is overwhelming!!  My daughter, although still young, doesn’t grasp math easily and I’m trying to find a program that will work well for her.

I really like the spiral approach, but my two who use TT are quite good at math, so I can’t speak to how it would work with someone who struggles with math.  My kids use just the CDs with scrap paper.

Have you tried the sample lessons on TT?  And the placement test?  My 8YO is working on TT4 and my 12YO has been working on PreAlgebra for almost a year.  I wonder if TT4 might be too easy for your 10YO.  In my experience, the grade level on TT tends to be about a year behind public school.

I haven’t done the sample lesson yet.  I keep have bits of time to look at a little of the website but not finish looking at all of it.  I looked over the placement test but haven’t given it to DD.  I’ve been trying to figure when it would work best to give it to her.  She is never thrilled about doing school and giving her something extra is not going to go over smoothly.  When looking at it, I think she could easily do most of the Grade 4 placement.  The Grade 5 I know she wouldn’t pass.  But, I understand that division is introduced in Grade 4.  She hasn’t done division yet, so would it be okay to completely skip it in Grade 4?  Would there be enough review of the basics of division to just jump into Grade 5?  I have not used a spiral math before, so I’m unsure if I would make it difficult for her to skip the initial introduction of division.  Any thoughts?

I just switched ds9 from MUS to TT. He tested into TT5 though he’s in 4th. He was doing fine and would with any program, I think. However he craves just getting it done in some ways and the endless ways of explaining in MUS were getting tiresome to him. He would also end up overtaking his older sister at some point I think. It’s only been a bit over a month, but the change has been good for him. Dd13 expressed some interest in Switching to TT, but I’m not so sure that’s the best idea for her. She’s part way through MUS Epsilon (lesson 8) and has been working with Key To Fractions and we home to be ready for PreAlgebra by summer. We have to get through fractions and decimals first.

Eta – ds hasn’t had division expect for fact memorization and so far he’s fine.

Thank you, again.  It is good to know that your son, missceegee, has done fine with the TT5.  DD and I talked a bit about math today.  She doesn’t like doing math everyday and that is why she doesn’t like MUS.  I told her that wouldn’t be changing!  She doesn’t like that her sister is always doing the same thing as her but it doesn’t seem to be a huge deal.  We watched a couple sample lessons of TT.  She said they were okay but didn’t make her really want to switch programs.  I’ll keep thinking on it.  I really hate to buy 2 different programs, but I also hate to squash DDs confidence and self-esteem.
