I was just asked (and agreed) to teach the 6th-12th grade Sunday School at our church 1 Sunday per month.  A curriculum will be provided.  I was wondering if any of you had some ideas for good books that I could read aloud to the students.  Or other ideas – maybe reading aloud a book just one Sunday each month is a bad idea.

My goal is to introduce some Charlotte Mason techniques and principles – while not making anyone wrinkle their eyebrows.

Any and all ideas are welcome!

Karen, I’m curious if you ended up trying to include some CM style teaching in the middle school and high school Sunday class you mentioned here. I work with high school girls once a week for about 30 minutes (it’s too short!), and I take a turn a couple times a year teaching a children’s church program for the month. The younger group I find easier to figure out how to bring some CM ideas in my teaching (maybe because my children are all 7 and under) but the older group I’m not sure about.

    Did you try anything?

Well, I introduced art study — a picture from a “master” that goes along with the Bible story from   http://www.artbible.info/.  I just print off an appropriate picture, laminate it, and show it to the children.  Depending on how much time we have, we talk about it some, just as I do here at home.

I also started a read-aloud.  We’re doing a story about Eric Liddel, who was an Olympic runner way back in the day (pre-WWI, I think)….I chose him because I have a lot of sports-y boys in my class.  Believe it or not, they do remember what we read about, even though I only teach the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of the month.  We don’t get very far each week, only about 5 pages or so.

I’ve been trying to teach the lessons in a more CM way, too.  Reading it aloud (either just me or reading around the room, everyone taking a verse) and then asking the students to “tell me what we read, right from the beginning”.  Depending on the topic, that doesn’t work well, but I try to  do it  when it will work.

As you said, it seems easier to incorporate CM methods in younger classes.  But, my high schoolers are easy-going and have been good to work with.

    Best wishes!
