Well, I introduced art study — a picture from a “master” that goes along with the Bible story from http://www.artbible.info/. I just print off an appropriate picture, laminate it, and show it to the children. Depending on how much time we have, we talk about it some, just as I do here at home.
I also started a read-aloud. We’re doing a story about Eric Liddel, who was an Olympic runner way back in the day (pre-WWI, I think)….I chose him because I have a lot of sports-y boys in my class. Believe it or not, they do remember what we read about, even though I only teach the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of the month. We don’t get very far each week, only about 5 pages or so.
I’ve been trying to teach the lessons in a more CM way, too. Reading it aloud (either just me or reading around the room, everyone taking a verse) and then asking the students to “tell me what we read, right from the beginning”. Depending on the topic, that doesn’t work well, but I try to do it when it will work.
As you said, it seems easier to incorporate CM methods in younger classes. But, my high schoolers are easy-going and have been good to work with.
Best wishes!
