My ds is 9 years old and is very interested in marine biology. I would love to hear any curriculum/living book/suggestions that any of you might have in teaching this area of science. Thank you very much!
You might look at Apologia’s Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the 5th day. We started it a few weeks ago and have enjoyed it so far with my ds7 and dd4. Most of the material covered is very similar to what I took in a summer marine biology and oceanography course. We just purchased the used textbook and gather home experiment supplies as we go. We didn’t do the Zoology 1 course (they wanted to gear up for a possible Sea World trip this spring) and it hasn’t seemed to have mattered. I haven’t found many living books yet. There was a Reading Rainbow book about a trapped whale…Henry or Humphrey the Whale that comes to mind off the top of my head. Maybe Magic School Bus on the Ocean floor. I think I remember hearing something about the Smithsonian Oceanic series covering marine mammals. A Jacques Costeau biography. 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. Pagoo by Holling . I haven’t seen it yet (we just picked it up from the library) The Blue Planet miniseries by BBC. There are a few Bill Nye episodes on Oceans, Whales, and Marine Mammals too.
