At what age do you begin to teach Bible study to your kids…as in them reading the Bible on their own? What resources do you like for this?
My oldest is 8 1/2 (boy), and while he reads, I have to make him read, as that is not his favorite thing to do. He recently made a personal decision for Christ. I did not learn personal Bible study until I was in high school, but I’ve seen some posts on here that make me wonder how I should go about teaching this skill. I want him to have a love for it and not do it begrudgingly. Thoughts? Ideas?
Start simply and build. My ds9 is a good reader, but doesn’t love it like the rest of us. He only reads what is required and when I require quiet reading of everyone. It isn’t what he chooses on his own.
My 9 year old girl started the Precepts for Kids series this year with Wrong Way, Jonah! I have heard that this is one of the better ones of the series to start with. DD eyed her older sibling working in this series of books last year, and she was eager to join in. It includes learning how to study a text inductively, memorizing key verses, drawing pictures of what is being depicted, etc. She very much enjoys it, even though she is not (like my other girls) what I would call an avid reader – more of a “dutiful” one. 😉 HTH!
My oldest is in 5th grade and started catechism with the same curriculum they use in our church/lutheran elementary school (les). She is actually enjoying it for the most part which surprised me but makes me pleased. I can’t give you the link as I am on my phone but if you look up Northwestern Publishing House it is under bible study curriculum.
I know there is a lot of great stuff out there.
