Seriously. I do have and have looked through some “resources” and they are all nice, but this is a “caught not taught” thing. If there is not a father in place to do it, find a godly man and attach your boys to him. IMO, moms should really stay out of it, except to expect the gentlemanly behavior. I always smile, nod, thank the boys when they do the gentlemanly thing, but I never sat them down to teach it. Dad took care of that. If I had had daughters, I suppose I would have had to teach some how to behave toward them. But I had a feeling that having the female Mom teaching the boys to give her special treatment wouldn’t be nearly as effective as having them spend time with and watch Dad as he opens doors, carries things, puts gas in my car, etc.
Yes, Dad very much does that. They also talk about chivalry and read books together that have valuable lessons regarding manhood (such as the Kingdom Series). But I want something we can work through here at home during the day – together, the boys and I. I saw where one mom was using George Washington’s code as copywork and using that as a springboard for disucssion on gentleman-hood 🙂 Also, there are a lot of really good books out there like The Squire and the Scroll, Charlie’s Choice, etc…and rather than google them all, I’d like to compile a list from other mommas (such a great resource!). I feel that this topic cannot be reinforced enough in the days we are living in when chivalry, selflessness, and self-sacrifice can be hard to come by
Bob Schultz has 2 books, Boyhood and Beyond and Created for Work that my dh went through with our boys. They are chapter books that he read to them and then discussed.
I’m sorry I can not keep silent, we have all boys so these books are dear to our heart. If you’re husband and sons enjoyed the Kingdom series (which mine too absolutely loved), they may also enjoy The Terrestria Chronicles.
