My 7yo has shown an interest in learning cursive handwriting. The more I think about it, that would probably work better for him, especially with the interest/desire present. He is VERY bright but handwriting has been a real struggle. I also read an article on this recently and I think I am seeing “symptoms of stress in the writing system” with him. Can anyone suggest a cursive handwriting book/curriculum/program that might be a good fit for him and this situation? Most books seem to assume print first. I am not really sure where to go from here. If I teach cursive now, should I go back later and teach/review print? I mean I think he does know how to print, it is just very difficult, so I don’t know if I should say that he has “mastered” print enough to “move on” to cursive. If I don’t try cursive with him my other option would probably be Handwriting Without Tears but starting at the Pre-K level or something! That seems silly though given his interest & desire to learn cursive, which I have read is actually easier for children than print and was always taught in 1st grade up until… I don’t know… the 1920’s? This is a funny situation to be in because I have never considered teaching cursive “first”! Although, I guess I’m technically not teaching it first. I did teach him print first, it is just not working for him!
I teach cursive first to my kids and it works very well. I’m short on time right now, but have posted here about it before. I’ve used Cursive First and Pencil Pete and The Joy of Cursive (currclick) with my kids. All were successful and I highly recommend any one of them.
