I would like to start teaching cursive to my DS this next school year. For his K and 1st grade years we did HWT. He is a lefty and I liked how easy it was to teach him. For his second grade year, I decided to switch to Presidential Penmanship Zaner-Bloser because I liked the quotes. Also, I knew that in the future I would be starting to teach cursive and I did not like the way HWT’s cursive looks. It is also different from the cursive that I learned.
So, what should I do to teach cursive? Should I pick a ZB program and do it alongside the manuscript passages from PPenmanship? Once you start cursive, do you no longer do manuscript copywork? I am just confused about how to teach cursive and STILL do copywork. Am I making any sense?
I have been teaching my dd cursive this year, using New American Cursive. That was mostly a style decision, though, really you can use any kind of cursive that you like the style of really. I have continued to have her do print copywork several times each week as we have worked through the workbook to learn all of the cursive letters. To my mind, copywork is about more than handwriting, it is also about internalizing good grammar, good spelling, and good writing style and I didn’t want her to miss out on that. (She also likes doing copywork, so it’s not a struggle to get her to do it.) We spend not more than 5 minutes on cursive each day, and perhaps 10 minutes more on her print copywork (and we don’t do them next to each other in our schedule) so for her I don’t feel like this is too much. We are just about done with the workbook, once we do I will start having her transition gradually to using cursive for her copywork and then eventually all her other written work as she gets more and more comfortable with it.
I switched my dd from HWT to D’Nealian Classical Cursive. I liked the way CC taught the forming of letters. After she finishes CC, she’ll start PP D’nealian cursive copyowrk practice.
I had them do 3 days of CC cursive learning and one day of manuscript copywork.
@junkybird – ha, ha…that is funny! I’ve known far too many other Jennifer’s of my generation (I think this is the case for all of us!!), and even knew a couple of Jennifers growing up that had the same last name as my maiden name…but first time I’ve met a Jennifer Snow. =)
