Don’t know if it makes any difference to you, but if you get one with an hdmi output you can hook it into your tv. This is a deal maker or breaker for us. I don’t know if the ipad has one, but I’d bet it does. I know the Kindle fire HD does, but only the HD version.
The iPad has a single port on the bottom and you can use small adapters to get to HDMI or other connections.
Where it really gets nice is if you connect an Apple TV device to your TV. Then you can wirelessly play anything on your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch, or Mac) to the TV. It’s so much nicer than connecting wires.

What about parental controls for WiFi? Both my girls want something mainly for e-reader and to have apps for games and such and movies. I am not real comfortable with them just having open access to the internet. Is it the Kindle Fire that has such good controls?? I-Pad is out of the questions for us due to price and I dont really need all the capabilities of it. I also am confused which way to go!!!

thowell…yes, the Kindle Fire has great parental controls. You can block out all web browsing if you desire…which is what I plan to do when my dd gets hers. I love my Kindle Fire!

I better explain a bit.
The Apple TV is a tiny box (4″ square by 1″ thick) that connects to your TV and your computer network (wired or wireless WiFi.) Any fairly modern TV with an HDMI input will work. Pretty much any widescreen TV would have what is needed.
Once connected, the Apple TV box can work on it’s own with or work along with other devices.
It has Netflix, iTunes store, YouTube, Hulu Plus, sports networks, and others built in so you can use those directly on your TV with the simple remote control that is included. You can also use an iOS device (iPad, iPod, iPhone) as the remote control with the free Remote app.
If you allow it, the Apple TV can access movies and music on a Mac or PC through iTunes. A feature called AirPlay on iOS let’s you play things you are viewing on your iPad, iPod, iPhone, or recent Mac wirelessly on your TV. It works for music, movies, photos, websites, and many games and apps.

I ‘m trying to pick out my first tablet and noticed your statement “Karen uses her iPad as her primary computer”. Any accessories in which she needed to invest to make that work?
Also don’t quite understand “the smoothest working and most consistent interface”. Can you please put that in very, very basic, non-tech terms? I do have what I want in mind. I just may not have the vocab with which to understand that.
Right now I’m leaning toward an iPad B/C I’ve read it’s easier for a newbie, has better and more free app selection. Def. waiting to see what the Tues. roll-out brings. (Going to set an appt. w/ the Apple store after roll-out). My only other device is a desktop PC, and I want to be able to use cloud storage, skype, media and photo editing/storage that’s interchangeably used w/ both devices.
Would love to hear your thoughts, thx

I’m sure this is nothing compared to everything that has been discussed on this thread. But, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the NORIA JR. 8GB 7″ Tablet, Android Jellybean 4.1, Dual Camera, HDMI, 3G Capable, Dual Core 1.2 GHz- Yellow. I want to get something for my dd(10) to play some games on, but I can’t spend too much. She would love to have one, but it would primarily be for games, as she does not read much independently yet because of her dyslexia. I found this on Amazon for $74.99. It says I’m saving $65. Would it be worth it for games?

@JD88, by smoothest and most consistent I mean that it feels very natural and intuitive when you use it. For example, iPads have been tested to be the quickest at responding to your touch commands. I’ve tried many tablets that have a bit of a lag and it’s very frustrating because you’re not sure if it received your command or if you have to try again. Consistency is important because you can count on the way you do things in one area or app being the same as elsewhere.
