I need some help. My dd is looking at tablets – 9″ to 10″- to use for typing (after getting a keyboard) for personal and school usage, reading her kindle books, skype classes. The important thing is NO Internet. Or at least, strong parental controls so she can only go onto something when I log her in.

Are there tablets with a place for insertion of CD-ROMs? For her future science and the Critical thinking skills cds.

I am clueless about this stuff.

    Thanks, Rachel

    Hi Rachel

We recently bought our children tablets, but were largely restricted by budget.  It is a veritable minefield out there, and I was pretty clueless, so I relied on my husband and son.  I was very nervous.

We ended up with a windows based tablet.  I understand that the android tablets have many more apps available for them, so that is something to bear in mind. I had a catalog of educational homeschool apps, and was so disappointed to discover they were all android ;-(

To research, I googled “tablets for homeschool” and there are quite a few computer guys who had reviewed this topic, which helped us a lot.

I may be incorrect, but you will have to have internet connection for skype, surely?

Would you not be able to purchase/install a parental control software if the device did not have it built in? Like Screen Retriever.

Then lastly, I also thought we’d use the tablet for typing and was disappointed to discover it had a “touch screen” keyboard, so we got little keyboards to plug into in, they sort of fit into the cover.  That works.

    Happy shopping 😉

I prefer iPad. You can disable access to  Internet with set parental controls, but internet needed for online courses, you can enter the password. No disc drive though. Loads of apps are available

Hubby had a windows touch screen tablet thing with a keyboard from work while he was waiting on his new MacBook.  He hated it compared to iPad.

My mom has a Samsung galaxy tab and an iPad mini. She doesn’t use either for much of anything, but prefers the iPad’s UI.

I don’t have a specific recommendation, but just wanted to let you know that any tablet/laptop/computer that has windows 8 will allow you to use Microsoft’s Family Safety program.  It is wonderful.  You can unlock only the websites you want to allow and you can make a different account with different guidelines for each child.  It MUST be the full version of windows 8, not the phone/tablet version.  We have HP stream tablets and they do have the full version of 8.1 Windows.  I’m not sure how large you can buy them.  We have the 8 inch and 7 inch.  They are great tablets.  I’m not sure that you are going to find a tablet anywhere that will allow you to put in a disc though.  My husband just loads the whole disc onto our desktop computer and then somehow transfers the info to the tablets.  Maybe you need a convertible which will function as a laptop and a tablet depending upon your need.        Here is the tablet we use:  http://www.amazon.com/HP-Stream-Windows-Tablet-Personal/dp/B00NSHLVD2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1437000296&sr=8-2&keywords=hp+stream+tablet

If you already use windows pc’s or macs, it is a good idea to stick with one platform.  I find it’s easier that way.  All our phones, computers, and tablets work together because they’re all windows.

One more thing I forgot to say.  On any tablet you get, you will have to enter the key code for your wireless router in order for the internet to work.  If you don’t want internet, just don’t enter the pass key.   But in order to use Kindle or Skype, you must have internet enabled on the tablet.
