Hi, I’m not new to CM. I have been reading up on her off and on for about 4 years. I’m involved in a CM support group that is lead by my Mom. I’m also not completely new to homeschooling, since I was homeschooled most of my school years. But this is my first “real” year of school with my 6 1/2 year old son who’s in 1st grade. We are currently using Ambleside Online, and I do think it’s good. However, I keep thinking about how it will be once next year comes and I have two children I’m teaching. It will be a LOT of reading to do!! So, I started thinking about how I can combine my 2 oldest children. (My third and last child is only 2, so it will be another 4 years before he’s added to the school mix.) The more I’ve read of SCM, the more I think it’s just what I’m looking for. Because two of my kids are so close in age (18 months) I see that they will pretty much be in the same books in history and science. And of course my youngest will join in with them in history.
SOOO…all that to say, I’m very excited about next year. And the thought crossed my mind that I could start my oldest in SCM now. But am I just jumping into this too quickly? If I start now, I won’t be able to finish the full year, since we started in June and already have 19 weeks of school behind us. I think that might really bug me to only get a portion of the way through the new material. 🙂 Anyone else deal with this? Is it a bad idea to change curriculum in the middle of the year? Should I just hang on and keep doing AO till the end of this year and start fresh with our new school year? It can be so helpful to get other’s thoughts on this. Thanks for reading!! Alice
I’m only slightly familiar with Ambleside and very familiar with SCM, so take this for what it’s worth. In my opinion, you should do what is easiest for you and your family. If it seems easier for you to continue this school year with AO, then do that. If switching to SCM seems easier, do that. If keeping one child in one program and using another program for other children seems easier, do that. Since AO is CM and SCM is CM, you’re going to be giving your children a CM education either way. My opinion on everything is that SIMPLICITY IS BEST. Only you know what the perfect fit for each child is. Only you know what will work best in your homeschool.
I only have a couple of minutes, but I did switch mid-year 2 years ago and it’s been great. I started w/ AO, switched to Higher Up & Further In after 1/2 year and then to SCM when DD was in 2nd grade.
I agree w/ Lindsey that simplicity is best! I have 4 kids – dd9, ds6, dd3, ds10 months – and it was crucial for me to keep them together as much as possible! We’re using SCM Module 4 for B,H, G and SCM is my framework. I use it all unless I find that something doesn’t work for us, then I consult my master book list for a substitution.
Anyway, you could do it either way, but switching was one of the best choices I’ve made.
Blessings on your journey,
Christie
