My children are 8 & 6 years old. We’ve been using Horizons math and have been pretty happy with it, but it’s a constant, daily, struggle to get my kids to sit and actually do it. They complain that there are too many addition/subtraction problems every single day! They are “bored” with it, they say! I’m wondering if a mastery program would be more fitting for them. Is there a way to tell before I invest the money in something else, or is it like anything and I just would have to purchase and see? Is there a math program that is a mix of both spiral and mastery?
I’m not aware of one that mixes both so, we use 2. I use Miquon for Mastery & CLE (Christian Light) for Spiral. And we are loving the combination. Both are very affordable. And with Miquon, I had the binding cut off and had the books 3-hole drilled so I slip the sheets into a dry erase sleeve so that I can reuse them with my Son. With CLE she writes in the Light Units and each one has 2 quizzes & 1 test so that’s my “record keeping” for Math. I will come back and post a link to the post where I originally talked about it.
Could you just go through and mark out, say, the odd number problems? (As long as they are getting the other ones correct, of course.)
We really enjoy Saxon math… the workbooks are plain, the topics vary and are only a few problems for each type, but what we like most are the manipulatives. 🙂
We use BJU for my middle kiddo. It’s mastery, but has a built in review every chapter (approx. every 10 lessons). There are also extra practice lessons you can print off if you need them and a review book as well, if needed. The beginning of each lesson also has a review section. There is a ton of built in review! I find it to be a very nice mix of mastery/spiral and very easy to skip the parts my DD has already mastered.
We use CLE Sunrise and LoF now, but we started with RightStart. RS is very unique and has few worksheet problems. Much of it is mental math and manipulatives and math card games. I would say it is both mastery and spiral in a way. I highly recommend the RightStart program, but we had to switch to more independent math with spiral CLE. We have supplemented it with mastery programs when needed for short times of RS Activities for the AL Abacus and worksheets, Math Mammoth, and xtramath.org for math facts.
