    My dad recently passed some old books on to us that have been in the family for as many as 120 years. One such book is Swiss Family Robinson, a “new” version by E.A. Braley Hodgetts, copyright 1897. Is anyone familiar with this particular version? I had no idea there were multiple versions. It includes sketched illustrations throughout. I was planning on reading it aloud to my 6th, 4th, and 1st graders,but since discovering this isn’t the original I wanted to research further.

    If I remember correctly Johann Wyss was from Sweden and the book was originally written in German. So anything in English is a translation.  🙂  Enjoy it!

    We recently read Swiss Family Robinson.  I did a LOT of research trying to figure out which one to get.  Appartently there are many (over 100?) versions of this story, with different, different characters and more.  I can’t remember now but it seems like even the original German version wasn’t completed by Johann Wyss but by his son.  Anyway, we settled on one of the more common and well accepted english translations by William Kingston (translator).  Apparently his translation is one of the oldest and best.
