Ok, I was sitting here enjoying a bowl of Ice Cream with Goats Milk and I was thinking how wonderful this Kemps Ice Cream is. Then, I remembered when I wasn’t an Ice Cream fan.  It was before I moved to the U.P. of Michigan.  It seems like Ice Cream parlors are as prevelant as Bars up here.

I realized we are very blessed with great Ice Cream up here.  For instance there is Macinac Island Fudge.  We have Jilberts Ice Cream which uses only local dairies.

So, I was wondering…… 🙂   What kind of Ice Cream do you like?  Toppings?  Is there a special kind that is just in your area that everyone just raves about.. ???    If I am ever in your area I may want to try these out! 🙂

My newest  favorite that came out about 4 months ago is Kemps Cow Tracks. (Fudge with mint Ice Cream and chocolate mint cows in the middle. Mmmmm! )  Before that it was Lady Bug…  and then Carmel collision.

I also like milk on mine!!!   anyone else?

My husband puts milk on his and stirs it all around until it’s soupy.  Gross.

My absolute favorite is Haagen Dazs Five Lemon.  Sheer heaven.  But it’s not available in the entire state of NE.  I hate NE.  My back-up is Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food.

Growing up I loved Tillamook or Umpqua ice cream.  Local to Oregon and parts of Washington….and some parts of ID is you’re lucky.  We have Kemps here….I might have to give that a whirl.  Ice cream is my go-to food – I eat it when I’m happy, I eat it when I’m sad, I pick it over any other sweet or salty snack or a meal if I can get away with it.  I LOVE ICE CREAM.

I remember the ice cream and Macinac fudge, my hubby is from Traverse City and we spent a break up on the island…good stuff. What I love most though is the Italian icecream in Italy and in the parlours in Germany, never had anything else like it….so different to what they call Italian in the US here and in England – just yummy the real stuff.

Oooh, Jilbert’s ice cream is the best! We usually stop and get cones when we’re “home” in the U. P., though it’s been a couple of years since our last trip.

Here in north central Illinois (near the Wisconsin/Illinois state line) the best ice cream is at an ice cream shop in a small town. They’re only open in the summer but Dairy Haus is the best in the area.

@ Karen- Have you ever tried Bonnie Doon?  That is made in South Bend, In.  It is shipped to Ill.  It was the best in the area for many years.  They also have some good flavors.. 🙂

@ missingsthe shire-  My son loves Italian Ice also.  It is the only thing he can have since he has so many allergies. That is what my daughter is eating now. 🙂  Where were you in Germany?  I was an exchange student in Gutersloh. We also have relatives that live there.  Love the Ice there too.   I guess the custard up here is different then in other parts of the world also.

@ – Crazy 4boys — I don’t like mine soupy either.. 🙂  I like it with chunks of ice cream with a little milk in the bottom. just enough to make it soft without giving me a brain freeze. 🙂  I never use to like  it that way until I started eating Moose Tracks with a little chocolate syrup in the bottom stirred in with root beer.  It made a great root beer float.  I liked that one at a ice cream/soda fountain in Indiana.  Had to try it for myself.. Then , one day I forgot to buy the root beer and all I had was milk… I am now addicted to having something in my ice cream. 🙂

Just getting ready to make ice cream from our cows cream/milk now.  Nothing better in the world.  Apple pie in the ove, too.

I just got this (sounds very weird) recipe for home made ice cream using ricotta cheese.  And being I can’t have dairy queen as I only eat xylitol (excpet very rare instances) I tried and LOVED it.  Almost tastes like cheese cake!  My kids even liked it better than the home made one I made for them using there sucanant sugar.  Loving it!  But if I am to get it from somewhere there is a state park by us and about a mile down the road is a famous for small ice cream parlor and they have a Rum Cherrie that is to die for.  At DQ when I do splurge I like to get a Recess peanut butter cup blizzard with peanut butter sauce.  I mean if you’re going to splurge, splurge all the way!  :0)

down here in SW Arkansas we like Blue Bell Ice Cream or Yarnells 🙂  My family loooooves ice cream – I am not the biggest fan, but I eat it occasionally.  But, wow, once I got Blue Bell Key Lime Pie – I could have eaten the entire container!  Luckily that is a flavor that I hardly ever see LOL I don’t dare buy it again.

Hubby and daughter have a current favorite – cherry cheesecake.  I always get pralines and cream when we go to an ice cream parlor, it reminds me of my granny.  That was her favorite.

Robin – yummmy homemade ice cream!

We tend to go plain Jane, store brand stuff right now because of the expense. But when we do/did splurge, we’ve tried and loved Blue Bell Banana Pudding and their Blackberry Cobbler. That was a Limited Edition a few years ago. I also like Banana Split but stopped buying it when ds asked to try some. Didn’t know it had cashews in it (he’a allergic). Could probably go for it again, though, since he’s old enough to understand about his allergy now.

I agree with Gem-Blue Bell is worth getting if you’re in the Deep South.

We’re store brand here too – can you picture how much ice cream the 9 of us eat in just one sitting?

We actually have cut back a ton and been doing green smoothies in our blender mostly, but the occasional ice cream is a fun treat.

I never really cared for ice cream prior to making my own.  Since we have multiple food allergies here, we make either almond, coconut, or a mixture of those two to make our ice cream.  We usually serve it soft serve style with choices of sixlets, gummies, sprinkles, bananas, cherries, chopped nuts, homemade chocolate sauce, strawberries, and nut butter.

Our other favorite recipe is blending frozen banans in our Vitamix.  YUMMMMM.  Same choices for toppings.

    The kids love either version.

One time when we were up in Copper Harbor, MI we stopped by the local ice cream shop and they had some very good and unusual flavors. I don’t think it was Jilbert’s that far over in the U.P., though. I tried the jalapeno ice cream and it was actually quite good. (But then I do like habanero chilis and pineapple, finely chopped and sauteed in butter over vanilla ice cream.) Karen didn’t want a taste. Smile

But the best ice cream I think I’ve had is when we made our own with the fresh picked peaches from our tree.

I have lived in Gottingen which is near Hannover, Frankfurt, and in a little town called Homburg when we were stationed at Ramstein. I also spent some time in Heidelberg, and down in the Garmisch area, so I know the place pretty well…I spent about 15-16 years there all told, it is like home to me, and I miss it in some ways more than England. My mum was German and I have relatives in Nothern Germany and in what used to be East Germany. Linda

@ Doug–  That is an interesting mixture. I may have a lick just to say…. O.K. I tried that and didn’t like it.. LOL  I think I would go for the peach Ice Cream though. I love fresh homemade peach cobbler too.

The Ice Cream shop up in Copper Harbor does carry Jilberts now but I think they also carry Blue Bunny or something with a Creek in it’s name.  Jilbert’s is one of the largest dairies in the UP.  I laugh because Dean’s tried to under sell their milk and people would still buy Jilbert’s. They don’t use hormones and they built up their business over the years. They buy from local dairy’s all over the U.P.  So, everyone knows where the milk comes from.  So, if they couldn’t put them out of business they had to buy them out.

My sister works up in Copper Harbor at an Inn.  She also lives in Calumet but is moving closer. Now I will have to visit more often… Oh no. I will have to see what flavors they have.  I agree they did have more unusual Ice Cream up there compared to most shops up here. 🙂

Did you come up for the fall colors?

Linda–That is neat! I have been to almost all of those places.  Have you ever heard of Heininger beer? Brewery?  That is our family Brewery. When I was over there people couldn’t believe it was my family brewery. Well, I am not the norm in my family either.. I don’t drink coffee and I don’t drink alcohol so I think I was adopted or something. 🙂

Tristan– I bet you have to buy the pail when you buy your Ice cream….  I found out that you can buy one of those 10 gallon buckets from the Ice Cream shop probably cheaper than the ones in the store.  Well, at least up here you probably could. 🙂  What do you put in your Green Smoothie?

Blue J — I so want a vita-mix. It would make smoothie so much easier! 🙂  Mmmmm Coconut Ice Cream…:)

Misty — I bet that ricotta cheese Ice Cream would taste good. I like ricotta. It might be a little rich though. I don’t do DQ either.  My girlfriend came up to visit and we did go there for the first time since I was a small child. I bought  their new iced hot chocolate. It was good but I think it is soooo  expensive.  I don’t like their Ice Cream as much as going to a shop or buying Jilberts.  So, if it wasn’t for my girlfriend I would not have gone there. She loves Blue Bunny. She watched how they made “Champ”  Ice Cream on T.V. and was amazed they sold it up here.  She couldn’t buy it anywhere near her home.

Gem and Nerakr– It sounds like BLue Bell has some good Ice cream choices down there. I hope I get to go south soon and try some of those flavors. 🙂   I bet Key Lime Pie would be good…. Mmmmm

Robin—   Where did you say you live???? I will be over shortly for some of that fresh Ice Cream… Mmmm  Maybe we can try some of these great ideas above to make it even better…  Maybe we could make BlueJ’s chocolate syrup.  Mmmmmm….

Such great ideas.  I love hearing all of them…
