I am starting to ponder getting my act together and the planning school year.
What kind of sweet things do you do to make the first day back to school special for your “academy”.
I generally make a fun display of their new books in their baskets, have a bundle of personal school supplies tied together with ribbon at their breakfast place setting, and make them a welcome-to-grade-__ card.
What do you do? Or let’s brainstorm for thoughtful things….
We do a special breakfast, pictures out by the tree in the front yard, hand prints onto cardstock for their folders (at first I did in clay/plaster but where to store?). A few new supplies as needed, a new picture study displayed, etc.
We do a preview day where the kids get to peek at the books we’ll use for the year, browse the science book to see what’s coming, etc. It whets their appetite for lessons to come.
We started doing a back to school dinner the night before our first day. We usually pick a motto or theme verse for the year, and we have the kids copy it out and illustrate it. We also print it and put it in a frame on our table.
We do a special breakfast, but this year, we had muffins that I put candles representing their year in school (k for kindergarten and a 2 for second) and let the kids blow it. Out and make a wish for the upcoming year. It is super cheesy, but they loved it, and it made for great pictures!
I usually do some kind of simple decorations…some streamers, balloons, whatever I have and can pull together. We have a special breakfast and take pictures on the front porch steps. This is when they get their new colored pencils (the best art supply ever, and the one they use all the time. I highly recommend them. They are the Lyra color giants if any are interested). They usually have worn theirs down to nubs and are anxiously waiting a new set.
Last year I made a simple sheet w/ questions for them to fill out and trace their hands, record thier height, favorites, etc. They get to decorate a page for the front of their binder for the year. I also read a thread on here last year that some people started slowly and added more subjects, easing into school. This worked well and I will probably do something similar this year as well.
Oh goodness my boys are starting 3rd grade (always homeschooled) and I’ve never thought to do anything special the first day. My poor kids. I’ll have to pull some of your ideas together this year and see how they like that. Thanks for the guilt…oh no, I mean inspiration! 🙂
