I have three boys who have been diligent throughout the school year and would like some fun books to read over the summer. By fun, I don’t mean ‘twaddle’, but good quality books perhaps not based on history or science (our usual fare during the school year). I am specifically looking for books in the 5th-8th grade interest and reading level. Thank you for your recommendations!

For my more sensitive, shorter attention span younger boy (age 10), he’s enjoying Grandma’s Attic stories, a finely illustrated Wind in the Willows unabridged, Understood Betsy, Narnia (usually the audio drama, but he’s working on reading it too), Lamplighter audio dramas and books, Trumpet of the Swan, picture books with animals/illustrated chapter books, The Dangerous Journey, bug field guides.
Aloud together: in addition to also having read the above lists, some favorites also have been Little Lord Fauntleroy, Heidi, Swiss Family Robinson. Books by E. Nesbit (like The Railway Children) and George McDonald (Princess and the Goblin…). My oldest,12 yr old ds, has read these on his own also and enjoyed them.

This is from Memoria Press’ actual school in Louisville. Memoria Press has amazing taste in books, so their curriculum has many great choices as well! Especially their read aloud book selections.
