For those of you who do a lighter school schedule during the summer, what do you feel is a reasonable bedtime? Or do you keep bedtime and wake time the same year round?

We keep it the same year round; though I would like to move it forward by 30 min, but my hubby doesn’t, so that’s that.

In my family, it’s important to keep our sleep/rest schedules as consistant as possible year round. Nothing changes as far as chores to do in the morning, life carries on no matter the season.

For us living in KY right on the border of CST and EST it doesn’t get dark until close to 8:30 or 9:00. My DH doesn’t get home until after 6:00. We all work in the garden and do all the farm chores too. So we don’t get the kids to bed until 9:00 or 9:30 by the time we do baths, family devotions, and read alouds.

So are summer bedtime schedule is much different then our rest of the year schedule. That means the dc normally wake up later in the morning too..instead of 7:00 it’s more like 8:00 and sometimes 8:30. And even my oldest take “naps” sometimes during the HOT afternoons if they need them.

No matter what time of the year or what time they wake up we do the same routine of work. I don’t hold firm to the exact time but just the routine of chores and work.

To answer your question…I think “reasonable” is relative to your family. Some people would think I am horrible to let my kids all under the age of 8 stay up until after 9:00 sometimes 10 but it works for our family.

To add to the above…I would rather see my DH playing baseball with my DC in the back yard until 9:00pm then to think that the kids HAVE to be in bed at a certain time just so we can start our schedule the next morning ON TIME. 😀

(I’m not saying that you were implying this but I just wanted to make that point.)

We too schedule bedtimes by the suns rising & setting. We’re outside in the gardening season planting, cultivating and harvesting sometimes until 9:45pm. I have to confess last week our boys (13, 8 & almost 2) were not in bed until 10:30 but we were enjoying our family time in the great outdoors followed by Swiss Family Robinson. DH enjoys being outside as much as possible and loves to have the boys with him, so we’ve never had a problem keeping them up until after the sun sets. We’ve been known to have late evening nature studies in the summer 🙂 . What fun! We live in cold northern Michigan, so we take advantage of the long warm summer hours.

So, I guess we’re more laid back when it comes to scheduling bedtimes. However, in the winter, when the sun sets early, we’re in bed sometimes by 8:00. Regardless of bedtime, we still follow the same routines upon waking all year round. I’m sure you’ll do what works best for your family.

Like Heather, we pretty much go with the hours of sunlight 😀

Thanks for your responses guys! We keep our chore routine the same as well, but the evenings were beginning to feel chaotic and I thought perhaps bedtime should be enforced again. But after prayer and seeing your responses, I realize the chaotic feeling wasn’t completely about the hour we go to bed but what we’re doing with the hours before we go to bed. (Too much free electronics time!! 🙄 .) I love the ideas for late evening nature study.

    Thanks again!

I agree that it would be nice to have sleep/wake times set to the sun so we could spend more time outside in the evenings with dh. However, we cannot. I hope that we outgrow this, but my girls (4.5 and 1.5) are very consistent wakers. They are awake between 6:00-6:30 every morning and some mornings it is 5:30. It does not matter what time I put them to bed, they wake up at the same time. And the oldest doesn’t take naps anymore. So if I keep them up late, it’s not a fun day the next day. Our bedtime year round is 7:30, 7:00 if I can swing it. Looking forward to the day we can play outside after dinner and not worry about crankiness the next morning. 🙂

Our chores stay the same, and we try to keep the same bedtime. We are all up by 7am no matter what so we need to keep the same bedtime or they just don’t get enough sleep. Also, routine for us is a must!~

Our younger kids (7 and under) go to bed at 7pm during the year, but we move it to 8pm in the summer. We are also fairly flexible about this summer time. I find that if we drive anywhere, the 3yo and 5yo will certainly fall asleep and then will not be able to fall asleep. We really enjoy the flexibility of the summer, but find that if we go too crazy, everyone pays the price!

We also follow the sun for sleep times. I would love to say we follow it for wake times also but I would by lying!!! LOL!!!
