I’m looking at transitioning to SCM Module 6 in a few weeks. I really love the simplicity of SCM and am excited to give it a try. I would really like to get some feedback from those here that are using SCM with a high schooler…How many subjects and books do you schedule per day?
I don’t count the books necessarily, I just schedule our day. 🙂 I use SCM’s guide for Bible/History/Geography and then add in our other items. A typical day might look like this:
FAMILY
Bible Catechism Memorization (10 Commandments/Lord’s Prayer/Creed, etc) Bible Memorization/Hymn (Right now it a Psalm and our hymn is Beautiful Savior) Folk Song (My Country ‘Tis of Thee) Poetry (Right now it’s John Donne) Nature Walk (will be adding in our nature readings in the next few weeks so we’ll alternate – the reading takes 10 minutes) Geography Read Aloud (right now it’s Pride and Prejudice on audio CD) Family History Reading (I will start to read A’s The Middle Ages out loud while it covers Charlemagne as I want both girls to learn more about him, and Dorothy Mills covers him in nice detail) Composer Study Artist Study
INDIVIDUAL WORK
Grammar/Writing (Hoping to get an Epi Cardia for L soon. I’ve changed my mind on this – AGAIN, so now we don’t have it.) Spelling Wisdom Science (Chemistry for L; we’re following Harmony Art Mom’s squidoo lens for this) Independent History reading Math*** (MUS Geometry 3x’s / week; the other two days we do Compass Drawings as a family and mental math separately but together one day and a video, right now Vi Hart’s videos, and our own hands-on try at the video topic and mental math. We may add in a bit of Fred to be read aloud for 15 minutes to one or both days depending.) Foreign Language (L and I sit down and do German together using Guoin’s methods this year. This is a first for me, but I’m liking this very well, and I find that I’m thinking in German already when going through our series which is different than any other foreign language experience I’ve ever had. I was sceptical that it could possibly be that easy and start out that way, but it seems to be working for me – and for L, too.) Guitar PE – this will sometimes be separate and other times be a family thing Scheduled additional reading either a bit of Literature to get in Am Lit, Brit Lit, etc. OR an additional history book. Free reading from a list to be done at her pace Book of Centuries – together yet seperate

Thanks so much for sharing! About how long does a day end up being for your high schooler then?
Our day lasts about 4 – 4.5 hours which does not include the free reading choice or PE as that changes with seasonal activities. Also, since we are listening to the family read aloud, we do that during lunch time, so that really isn’t a part of the 4 hours I calculated. Even when I’m reading aloud, I will do that in the afternoon or evening depending upon the day an our family schedule. There are days when it does take her a little longer, but that’s not the norm.
