Suggestions for Field Guides?

    We started Nature Study last week and I am amazed at how wonderfully the children responded!  I didn’t like having to wait until later to research on the internet what it was that we saw after we came back inside.  I have requested the Botsworth Comstock field guide from the libray, but if we like it, I know it is $35 at amazon which is more than I want to spend.  Does anyone have any suggestions for inexpensive ones?

    The Handbook of Nature Study (Botsworth Comstock) is not a field guide, you will want to find something else to use for that.

    It is only $20 on Amazon (still a little pricey)

    or you can get it online for free, you just have to print it out, or use an e-reader if you have one.  There are several editions to choose from, just choose read online to pick which one you like.

    Thank you so much for clarifying that!  I was under the impression it was a field guide.  I just got notice that it is in at the library, so I’ll be able to pick it up tomorrow.  Do you have any suggestions for inexpensive field guides?

    We just started Nature Study not too long ago too and LOVE the Peterson field guides.  They are inexpensive and have been great to use.  Also, I was in a children’s book store a few months ago and they had coloring books put out by the same people that go along with the Peterson field guides.  I highly recommend these as well. They are gorgeous coloring books (not something I say very often ;0) ).

    I’ve only bought a few of the field guides so far and amazon.com did have some of them for their 4-for-3 special, but not sure if they still do.  I started with a tree one for our region, insect one, wildflower one, and bird one.

    I like the Peterson guides as well, also Usborne has some nice ones.  Dover has great nature coloring books — we have some bird ones and insects.

    If you have a local nature center, they might have field guides available for you to look at so you can see that best suits your purpose.

    I like jotting down characteristics or making a sketch and then looking up the info when I get home in the field guides or online. It seems easier for me than carrying another book. (And this method is improving our skills on what characteristics to jot down…sometimes we come home and realize we didn’t observe important clues!)
