Does anyone have any good recommendations for some art instruction? My daughter(10) loves art. She loves to draw, and I have some how-to-draw books that will help in that area. I would like her to have some instruction in painting as well. Anyone have any suggestions? I have a Barry Stebbing book, but he focuses a lot on drawing people and many of the things are too complicated right now. He doesn’t have much nature included either. I thought about his DVD Beginning Painting. Is anyone familiar with that? He also has a DVD Beginning Drawing. His books look complicated from what I can see on the website. I’m just not sure where else to look.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend the Creating a Masterpiece DVDs sold here!! There are a few informative threads about them. I have no art background…at all… but these DVDs are incredible! We walked out to milk this morning and the sky was blazing with a gorgeous pink sunrise. The first thing I thought, after giving thanks to God, was that I wish I had my pastels. 🙂

Another vote for Creating A Masterpiece! We have so enjoyed this curriculum this year! There are several DVDs to choose from. We have 5 of them and have worked in 3 of them. Two of my girls (age 9 and 15) are using it and both are learning a lot and having so much fun while doing it.

I just went and looked at Creating a Masterpiece. My daughter and I watched a portion of the sample video, painting flowers. My daughter loved it. Only after we watched it, she said she was more interested in drawing than painting. She also likes using pastels. I am going to get two of them for her. So, although she knows I am looking at this, she will be surprised if she gets them for Christmas. She doesn’t expect me to get them now:) I would like to get supplies to go with it. I’m assuming there will be a list when I get it? Thanks for getting me on board with this. I heard people talk about it, but never looked into it. This will be great!

I’m not sure now. If I order Lessons in Pencil: Sunflower, is the sunflower all that she teaches them to draw? There aren’t any other actual pictures she teaches them to draw on that DVD? I thought there might be several pictures where she would give instruction. Clear me up on this.

We are in the middle of the Sunflower DVD now. There are several lessons, but mostly they work on just the sunflower. However, the first few lessons are all about teaching them to observe what they are drawing – they do a lesson on a seashell, a tea kettle, and a duck before moving onto several lessons on the sun flower. So they can take what they learn in the DVD and apply it to other things they may like to draw. I let my son pick what art curriculum he wanted, and his chice was creating a masterpiece DVD’s. He (and the rest of my kids) are all loving it.

We, too, will be using Simply Charlotte Mason’s art products after we finish our current curriculum which is Artistic Pursuits (AP) Book One. I put together my own art packs through Rainbow Resouce. Here is the link to AP.

Have Fun! Art is our favorite subject but the one we are the worst at. 🙂 We just have fun and learn together.

Be sure to check out their (Creating a Masterpiece) Facebook page – they have a challenge every month where they give away really cool supplies to people that have completed their projects (there’s a drawing, but they are such a small company that your chances of winning are HIGH).

Once she learns how to draw the sunflower, she can take these techniques and apply them to something else she wants to draw before moving on to the next DVD…or going back later – whatever you prefer. This is what we have done, and the girls have enjoyed it.

Creating a Masterpiece, Artistic Pursuits, and Southern Hodge Podge. They all look good. It will be a hard choice:) Maybe over the next few years we could use them all. My daughter loves art:) Thanks for all the input.

I’ll throw another recommendation in the mix. We really like Atelier. The levels can span multiple ages. It is DVD based and she walks children through each project step by step. While it is a bit pricey, I find it holds its value well when you want to resell it.
