I thought I was going to buy a Kindle Fire, but I think a tablet will be more utilized here. I cannot spend a lot on one, but I don’t want a cheap one. What is recommended in the tablet line that would be good, but on the economical side?
We just bought this one on ebay for $58. My sons researched it before we bought it and checked with all their techy friends and it seems like a good one for the price.
jean – Thanks for the suggestion. I’m looking at that one, but not sure yet.
Laura – I don’t know what they do differently. I would probably not use the Kindle for much reading at this point. I was looking for something inexpensive that could be used for multiple things. One is for my dd to have something to play games on when we travel. We go on a lot of 3 hour (one way) trips for my older dd’s dr. appts. We have married children out of state. My dd 10 has dyslexia, so she does not do a lot of reading at this point. We play a lot of stories and music on CD, but she likes to be doing something with her hands if she is not sleeping. The drawing/coloring things are good for a while, but I need a back-up. So, I thought maybe a tablet would be a good thing to have on hand.
The Kindle Fire that we have can do all of that. You can watch movies on it (they are watching Shenendoah right now), they play games on it, they listen to music on it, I can go on the internet with it, and you can read. The only thing it doesn’t have is a camera for Skyping. And I don’t know if tablets have that or not.
Jeaninpa, thanks for the recommendation. It looks good, but I’m wondering how you go about getting books & apps & games, etc., & how costly that is. Like, I know you purchase things to download from Amazon (& lots of free books & games from there) for my daughter’s Kindle, and my younger daughter has a Nexus, so she gets things from the Google Play store….again, lots of free games (don’t know about books because she prefers old-fashioned printed material for reading). So, where do you typically get things to download? From Google maybe?
Also, did you buy yours used or new? Just wondering how reputable these sellers are.
One of the things I love about my kindle is the feature that allows you to read the text while the audio version plays. It is a wonderful tool for people who have dyslexia to help them with both speed and comprehension.
I do not have dyslexia, but I do struggle with doing devotions in the morning- I am not awake enough to remember what I have read at 6AM! I used the audio along with reading the text and I am able to focus enough to get something out of it. 🙂
I decided to go with the Kindle Fire HD. Best Buy has them on sale for $119. It is a little more than I wanted to spend, but I was leary about going with an off brand tablet for $79, not being sure of the quality. Kindle seems very reputable, so I hope to get use out of this for a long time:)
