We’re still trying to plug along w/ this book, but I don’t think my 10yo is getting much from it. Any suggestions?? I only need one book for him as he wants to listen in on Boy of the Pyramids w/ his br., but we have read that before. I was hoping for something for just him, a chapter book that wasn’t too long, but could get us through for awhile.
I have A Picturesque Tale of History volume 1 which covers Egyptian history. I have the Pharaohs book as well, but we ended up not using it, either. It covers all the same topics though.
It is not a story book like BOTP, but it is still interesting and short at only 112 pages. It covers more than Tut too. Rosetta Stone, Jean-Francios Champollion, Pryamids, breif mention of the gods, hieroglyphs and more. The b/w illustrations throughout are very nice. A good sample at amazon.
NOTE: I have not read it yet, only looked over it. As with any secular source, you may want to look over it before handing to your child. I will be reading it with my dd as she is only 7.
Have you checked out SCM’s Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors? My son is 11 and is reading it independently on alternate days. He loves it! He is also reading from Veritas Press’ Pages of History, though this book covers Creation through Martin Luther. From what I can tell, the chapters covering Ancient Egypt (with relevant Bible people/events) are Chapters 2-7. He really loves the story line of this one.
I do have SCM’s new book and am using it in place of Oxford’s as a read aloud to all my boys. I do have several picture books that he could read to his younger brother or listen in when I read them to him. And, I have SOTW, CHOW, and a few more books I can draw from. I’ll have to check out Pages of History, that sounds interesting.
I was hoping I could just find one good chapter book for him that was not too short/easy, nor too long/hard 🙂
Thanks everyone…I’m off to check out some of these suggestions.
My son also read The Golden Goblet. He read one chapter a day and finished it in about 3 weeks. The reading level was good for him and he liked the story. There are some disturbing elements, like the hanging of thiefs. We talked through each though and my son has a good overall impression of the book. He did not like Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, either. We also tried Shadow Hawk, but the reading level was a little too advanced for him.
