Are there any books you all have enjoyed that would be good substitutes for Roman Ransom and Detectives in Togas? Our library doesn’t have them, even through the larger inter-library loan, and I really don’t like buying books:)
I also would probably want to substitute the Story of the Romans since I skimmed it, (the one by Guerber) and it seems a bit much for my crew. I also can’t get the one revised by Christine Miller through the library.
It is hard to find fiction for that time period – especially for littles. We are going to use A Triumph for Flavius, Little Miriam of Galilee, Out of Darkness, and Our Little Roman Cousin of Long Ago. These all have some sort of Christian point of view, so it may be difficult to find them at your library (depending on their policies). I have had good luck with inter-library loans or you could look to see if there are free online books that would fit that time period. Hope you find something that works!
Thanks, I’ll check into those! I know there are plenty of books on Rome, but some are pretty heavy on the secular side, and I was hoping for something in this Module like Boy of the Pyramids was for Module 1.
Who is the author of Out of Darkness? I have one called that (or something similar about Louis Braille)
The book, Out of Darkness, is by Alicia Petersen. You can take a look at it in the Bookfinder, https://apps.simplycharlottemason.com/resources/detail/97918. In fact, all of the books ServingWithJoy mentioned are in the Bookfinder. I haven’t used them since my kids are teens & just now doing module 2, but I have seen them there.
Glad to see a discussion on this. I have a 9, 6 and 4 year old and we’re really struggling with “The Story of the Romans.” We are almost done with Term 1 and I’m not sure they are really getting much accept the fact that the Romans liked to go to war ; ) I am going to look into the books mentioend above. Here are a few others we are adding to our Roman studies for the year:
I wonder why romans wore togas
you wouldn’t want to be a roman soldier
The Roman News
Rome Antics
Julius Caesar’s Sandals
I also just hear someone recommend The Roman Mysteries series by Caroline Lawrence
