Does anybody have suggestions for a substitute for A Water Snake’s Year in 106 Days? The used ones on Amazon are either well above what I am willing to pay, or they just don’t sound in that good of condition. Our library does have the book, but only one copy. There are several in my area using 106 Days and I fear that we may be trying to use it at the same time! I did a search on Greenleaf Press and came up with Snakes Are Hunters. It is one of those “let’s read and find out science” books, like Your Skin and Mine and My Five Senses. Anybody looked at the inside of this book? Would it be a good living book substitute?
I’m one of those that are deathly afraid of snakes, so needless to say, we had to skip this book. I took my boys on a field trip to this *once a year* event in our town and let them go in the reptilian exhibit with their cousins. That was the best I could do.
I know it mentions in the guide to not let your children see your fear or lack of respect for all of God’s creatures, but they already know how I feel about certain animals, etc., so I couldn’t hide it anyway:)
I right there with ‘ya. I’m terrified of them…to the point that I passed out in the mall one time because they had one in the pet store window and had to pull the car over another time because I had run over one and began hyperventilating. But I think the book substitution would be fine. I have many of those type books on my library shelves but not that one. I’ll just let their dad read one of them to them.
Well ladies, I’m sorry. I probably made you uncomfortable even asking the question! LOL 🙂 I can’t say that I am terrified of them, but I certainly don’t like them. I have to deal with them once in a while because we have chickens. Chicken eggs=black snakes. Ick.
Maybe somebody else has seen the inside of this book, or has another suggestion? RobinP, since you have several of those books, I may go with it.
Yep, that’s one fear I have. We live on a farm with cows, chickens, etc. but, fortunately, I haven’t met one yet. I know my time is coming and I’m praying God will keep me upright when it does.
I would just die. We have had little, tiny, blue belly lizards, but that’s as far as I could go. If I knew my neighbor had a snake (just typing that makes me quessy) we’d have to move. I’d never be able to sleep, eat or go outside. I know it sounds crazy, but I am soooo afraid. My husband loooves to watch those animal shows on tv and he’ll watch ALL of them (including the s ones) and I just have to beg him to turn it off or I have to leave the house.
Then, I have to ask: HOW can you watch that?? He just looks at me like I’ve lost my mind:)
We have 2 snakes here too. Used to have 4-one died and one escaped. No idea where it went : ). Guess it’s a good thing that snakes are okay here since my boys love them.
We have read that book. I am not anywhere near as experienced as most of the other ladies on here but if I had to suggest something, I would say watching a good short documentary on snakes would be pretty good. I know it isn’t literature, but the book is all about the daily life of a snake…what they like to eat, where they like to sleep, sun, etc. I wonder even if the Handbook of Nature doesn’t have enough info in it on snakes to fill that bit in? Sorry I don’t know of any books right off…
Too funny, I just went over to the HONS blog and they are doing an outdoor hour challenge right now on reptiles and snakes. I guess I can just do that challenge when the time comes 🙂
