Hi!  My family and I live in Canada and will be using The Charlotte Mason method for the first time this year.  My big girl is in Gr. 2, my only son is in Gr. K and my little girl is recently three.  We will be using 106 Days of Creation, and are very excited to get started, however we are finding it difficult to get some of the books needed for the course.  In particular, Yellow and Pink.  The only copy we can find would be over 50 dollars and that is not including taxes or shipping (which, by the way, has been killing our budget!).  Since this book is needed right away (Lesson 3) we don’t have a lot of wiggle room to look for anything at a better price.  We were wondering if anyone out there might know of a good alternative for this book.  One that would have the same overall message and that would fit in with the lesson.  Any suggestions would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.  Thanx all!

I wish I knew exactly which one to tell you.  I’ve gotten most of my books for Module 1 and 106 Days of Creation on Amazon used, but I ran into the same problem with Yellow and Pink.  The cheapest I found it was $28 with water damage.  The one I have at my house we will be using if I can’t find Yellow and Pink for a reasonable price is:  You Are Special by Max Lucado.  I would love to hear what others have to say.

Thank you for your input and for the book suggestion.  I will be checking that book out right away.  If we find any other titles that would be good options I’ll let you know.  Thanx again for the help.  Happy homeschooling!

    Hi Linabean & Cindie!

Can you find Yellow & Pink through your libraries loan system? I have yet to find a book to compare to it – its very unique and one of a kind – the message of creation vs evolution is explained so well for younger kids.  Hope you can get your hands on this beloved book.

    Blessings,

No.  It’s at the local University library, so I hope I can somehow beg them; but our library system doesn’t have a copy.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I use the Worldcat sometimes to find libraries nearby that my library might reciprocate or inter-library loan.

My husband and I have not been able to find this book in our library system either.  I actually found a copy last night online at Powell Books for $6.95.  But when we worked out all the details, to get it shipped out to Canada would be way to expensive.  We have had this problem for a lot of the living books we are trying to get our hands on and unfortunately, our library system does not seem to carry most of the these needed books.  It has made for a bit of a frustrating summer of trying to plan out our first year of Charlotte Mason!  And we are running out of time!  The option from Powell Books might help Cindie, if you live in the U.S.

I can’t help with finding the book, only to say that we have requested it through inter-library loan.  I did learn that because it is an out-of-print book you may make 1 photocopy for personal use.  You may not sell copies of it, it is to be used for educational purposes. [Moderator’s note: please see our post on copyright and out-of-print books.]

I wonder if Ken Ham has a good book that can be used in place of the Yellow and Pink. His website is http://www.answersingenesis.com . He has many children’s books about creation vs. evolution.

Thanks for the tip, Miranda, I’ll keep it in mind.  Unfortunately it’s at $35 now in good condition; but even at that price, it’s still a bargin.  I saw a new copy on Amazon for $175, and one as cheap as $28 with water damage.  I was out of town since Monday, so I missed it.  I will try again!

As far as copying the book goes, I second that you can legally make a photocopy since it’s an out of print book. I was a bit leary of that and did some research on it and found that it was in fact true. [Moderator’s note: Actually, it is not true. Please see our post on copyright and out-of-print books.]

Sorry you missed the low price, Cindie!  It’s crazie how the prices are all over the board like that!  Hopefully you will be able to find another rare low price!

I have been so intrigued by this book after hearing so much about it.  It looks like I can get it through inter-library loan but would like my own copy.  I too had wondered about copying it since it is out of print. [Moderator’s note: please see our post on copyright and out-of-print books.]

Wow, Gutenberg.org and books.google.com don’t have an online copy either!  I think I’m going to make a color copy for me and a friend when I get a hand on it from an inter-library loan since it is just so rare now. [Moderator’s note: please see our post on copyright and out-of-print books.] If any of you run across one at a garage sale, buy it!  The odd thing is it was reprinted in 2003 and sold for $10, but now there just aren’t that many copies floating around.  I bet they are in wonderful home libraries of homeschool families  Wink.  I am more convinced than ever now after this wild goose chase for one book, that I am going to try to buy the books I really like and hang on to them!

    Blessings,

    Cindie

This link will help you locate Yellow and Pink at a library near you. It only works if you have local libraries that participate in the system, but many do. You’ll need to enter your zip code in the section titled Borrow or obtain a copy.
