Can anyone suggest a substitute or even just a replacement (in length and level) for Pharaoh’s of Ancient Egypt? I’m not keen on my daughter reading this book, but I’d like to find something else from the time period (not about pharaohs and gods … more about the culture and place, even) that would engage her. Ideas?

I don’t have an idea off the top of my head, but how old is your daughter? Would this be as a read aloud or independent?

She is 10. It would be for her to read independently.

What about Peeps at Many Lands: Ancient Egypt from Yesterday’s Classics?  I haven’t read it, but I opened up the preview.  You can do that also to see if it may work for you.

Yes, the Peeps book is good. There is also one titled What Really Happened in Ancient Times? A Collection of Historical Biographies by Terri Johnson that would be another option.

missceegee – have you read the Peeps book? I’m wondering would it just replace Pharoahs or Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors as well?? Thanks 🙂

Here is just my .02 worth:

Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt was a bit hard to get into at first for my dd, 11 but it finally caught on.  We have been reading it together and have both found it fascinating!   It actually has a lot in it about the culture -the pharaohs and pagan gods were, in my opinion, a central, if not the central part of the Egyptian culture.  Just my thoughts – the other suggestions sound great too!

Nina, we listened to the Peeps book on Librivox. It was interesting, and may work as a substitute for Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt, but I would try to keep Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors if you can. Very readable, and makes great connections with other cultures of the time.
