We just finished reading Strawberry girl as a family. What an amazing book ! It has become one of our favorites now. The other day I caught my kids talking like Birdie with her southern drawl and my son acting like Shoestring. Priceless ! And the ending was so uplifting . My son’s reaction was ” WOW ! Sam Slater was mean and nasty for 13 whole chapters, but God softened his heart for the last two chapters!! ” I could see them beginning to understand and grasp how redemptive and life changing HIS Love is for us 🙂
If you haven’t read this book yet , I recommend it !! . My kids would beg for another chapter.
We would like to read more Lois Lenski books ! I was contemplating reading “Flood Friday” next. Do any of you ladies have any Lois Lenski suggestions? Any other ones you have read that you could recommend?
Ditto on what’s being said above on Strawberry Girl. We also have Indian Captive (amazing), and Houseboat Girl (if I am remembering the title correctly) and my boys have loved them all (though I confess I have not read them personally -only skimmed and listened to narrations). We have several others. Bottom line is that my boys are now making lists of the Lois Lenski books that we DON’T have to make sure they will be on our next “to buy” list, LOL! That is a good sign, indeed!
Speaking of geography, I wonder if Google Lit Trips has any of her books on their site. If I have time a little later, I’ll check that out & post about it.
The very first book I checked out of the library with my own card the day I turned five years old—Indian Captive. 🙂 Love these. My kids liked them best around 7-8. They especially liked Corn-Farm Boy.
