I own SOTW vol 1 and A Picturesque Tale of Progress Beginnings 1.  I’m sure one of you used SOTW with SCM mod 1.  Can you give me an idea of how you lined them up?  I am considering getting Truth Quest if I can sqeeze it into my budget, but other than that, I’d really like to stick with what I have or can borrow from the library.  Suggestions welcome!  My boys will be in 3rd and 6th, if that helps!

I use SOW with the modules. I just completed my history outline for the year. I use SOW as a read aloud once a week starting from the beginning of whatever part of history that the module covers. This year is Ancient Rome, so I outlined from Romulus through the end of Rome, skipping the few chapters of other parts of the world. I also make sure to include the extra readings that my kids do on each topic.

Here is a slice of my outline. I refer to this to see what books I need and know the pages to go to right away.

    {Section 3} Roman Life

    A. Texts:

    i. SOW ch. 28 p. 215 (gods); p. 218 (roads); p.220 (gladiators)

    ii. CHOW ch. 33

    B. Books:

    i. Growing Up in Ancient Rome

ii. You Wouldn’t Want to be a Roman Soldier

As you can see, it’s very basic but it helps me to see what’s next without thumbing through the books. I also use All Through the Ages resource book to help me pick extra independent readings, alongside the SCM ones. I also like the SOW activity pages, and I try to incorporate it when it works out. I don’t stress about that though. 🙂

I use the SCM module for the bible readings, geography, and independent readings guide. I am not using Famous Men of Rome as my read aloud because my young ones would not do well with that. With Module One, however, you could just use SOW as a separate reading on whatever topic is being discussed. You could just make little notes on the SCM module pages of any SOW sections that you want to read. No outline needed in this case. 🙂

    Thanks,

I Know SOTW is a too young for my 6th grader, but I think it will be perfect for my 3 grader who is still struggling with narrations.  I thought it would be a good “jumping off” point for my 6th grader, though.  At this point I am undecided whether or not to use the Mod handbook or make up my own schedule from the guide online.  The second idea may work better as I will probably have to substitute many of the books as they are not availbale at the public library.  Then again, I may get it for the Bible & Geography parts.  I really have to watch my budget this year.  Unexpected house renos have a way of tightening purse strings!

Great post, thank you! I was just yesterday thinking about doing the same, use SOTW as a read aloud with the module. I just ordered SOTW at our library to see how it would fit in with Module1.

I am also planning to try to line up the parts of SOTW that go with module 1. If anyone else has already done this, I’d love to see your notes! I shared this link in another thread, but in case you haven’t seen it here are hands on projects that go with story of the world. I’m a visual person and like pictures. http://creeksidelearning.com/story-of-the-world/

Also on another thread someone mentioned this resource for hands on activities for the OT portion of module 1, my library had it and I see several projects I’d like to incorporate. “old testament days, an activity guide ” by nancy sanders.

4myboys, I think SOW is a liitle too young for my oldest too. But I like to have one history family read aloud that the younger can enjoy and so, to me, SOW fits. You’re right, it’s a great springboard for the older to jump from and dive deeper with independent readings. It’s a win-win resource for us.

It should be a fun history year with SCM and SOW together. I’m excited to begin!
