I have a friend telling me I just HAVE to get Story of the  World CDs and she goes on about how great they are.  I know nothing about them.  Are they good?  Helpful?  Fit in with CM?

They are secular, so I didn’t really care for them.  They combine fiction tales and nonfiction history and it is sometimes hard to tell which is true and which isn’t.  I prefer Mystery of History CDs, as they incorporate Bible and a Christian worldview.  I have SOTW 2 CDs, book, and Activities book for sale if you are interested.  Check for samples first, maybe at CBD or Rainbow Resource or the publisher’s sites.  Maybe you can borrow them from your friend first to see if they would be a good fit for you and your family.  If you have a history curriculum you already like, you would be missing out on some of that by fitting these in.  I have tried to do too much in the past and have to remind myself that 24 hours is all we get in a day.

We use them for history.  People seem to either like or dislike JimWeiss’ voice (the narrator).   There are samples on YouTube of the SOTW cds and I would recommend listening first.  I will say it took me awhile to appreciate his storytelling style, but it has grown on me.

Also, SOTW is strange in that Christian homeschoolers often find it too secular and secular homeschoolers find it too Christian.  We have greatly preferred it over MOH.

I am a Christian homeschooler and I really like SOTW.  I don’t use them consistently, but we will listen to a chapter here and there to supplement what we are already reading.
