Has anyone here used or reviewed Story of the World, and if so what’s  your take? We have used CM for years and my kids really don’t like the map work. Thought I would change it up a bit. Is the information accurate?

I realize this may not be a popular opinion, but I could not read this to my kids. I tried to use book one but it bothered me that it did not start at creation. I figured I could get past that, it just doesnt start at the beginning, no big deal. The first chapter is about nomads and it felt very secular to me. So many people love the book that I felt I really needed to give it a fair chance. I skipped ahead. I noticed the author only capitalizes God when quoting from the Bible. When referring to the God of the Israelites in her narrative it is lower case. Annoying, but lets keep trying. I skipped to the narrative of the Exodus. While she does say “the Exodus shows monotheism winning out over polytheism, because the one god (lowercase g in the book) of Israel was able to conquer the many gods of Egypt,” she does not give God the credit. She then ends the narrative with “Egypt, which had been powerful for a long time, was once again growing weak. …even a band of slaves without weapons could escape from the clutches of the Egyption army.” She does not credit God with their delivery, in my opinion. I stopped reading after this, I just did not feel she was giving God the glory. Maybe the later books are different since they dont try to re-write Biblical history, but I have a bade taste in my mouth from book one. Just my opinion, a ton of folks love these books, I am the oddball, as usual.

We use SOTW in conjunction with SCM.  The mapwork in SOTW is pretty nonexistent.  It’s just too easy and simple to really learn much.  But I do love the style of the narrative.  My kids really enjoy it.  But I agree that the stories from the Bible leave a little to be desired.  I either go into more detail straight from the Bible or do a review of that particular person, event, etc.  Now, I’m still in book 1 so I can’t say anything about 2-4.

As far as the SCM mapwork, we don’t do the tracing.  We label new countries as we learn them and use the additional books.  But we use a lot of songs and other ways to learn the countries.  That does make it more fun!

We love the books, we don’t use the activity guide, we just read and narrate. I’m hoping next year to add in Jay Wile’s science books, as they dovetail nicely with SOTW.
