Does anyone integrate Story of the World with one of the Simply Charlotte Mason History guides? If so, how does it work for you?
I have been using Story of the World for the last few years, but I would like to try SCM. I am nervous about switching since I will be using the STOW volume 4 this year 1850-modern times.
I switched from SotW to SCM’s Modules and haven’t turned back! I found that my girls really didn’t NEED all the coloring pages and extra activities. So that made the switch easier.
I found, too, that we just really liked reading the spine books (Stories of America and Stories of the Nations). The tone of the spines was so much more friendly, comforting, etc. I thought that vol. 4 of SotW was a little too focused on the atrocities of the war. The SCM spines certainly didn’t shy away from the atrocities, but the good things that happened during those years were pointed out and dwelt upon. It was just such a good fit for our family.
We really enjoyed taking our time through the read alouds and the individ. reads. With the SotW I felt like we had to rush through all the chapters in order to get to the read alouds and rush through those to get to the next thing. With SCM, there’s a plan, but it seems less rushed. I seem to be able to add in more books (usually for my oldest to read independently).
We are planning to use the SOTW 2 audio book this year, read by Jim Weiss. We will most likely listen in the van. I will not be reading the Famous Men of… books. I will read aloud other family literature and the kids have their own independent readers. I am looking forward to the Louise Vernon books for the Reformation, used in SCM. I like the focus on other countries and cultures that SOTW 2 seems to add to our studies. I do not plan to use SOTW 4 for module 6 because I have heard there is too much focus on wars. We had done SCM spine books for those already and really enjoyed them and I learned a lot too. I will consider adding the audio book of Mystery of History or Diana Waring for module 6 when the time comes. We like to listen to audio books in the van, especially if it is too dark to read. But they are not really necessary. SCM module 6 on its own is enough and very engaging.
WingstoFly, I am planning to do the same as you with the audio of SOTW2 in place of Famous Men for module 4. Are you using it in conjunction with SCM’s guide? If so, have you figured out which SOTW chapters fit with which SCM lessons? We still have some Roman history to cover, so I would love to hear how you are doing it when you plan it.
artcmomto3, I have the SCM guide and am using ideas from it, but I made an Excel spreadsheet to organize it together with SOTW2 and some Look What Came From…country books, as well as a few other books. I am fitting books in, not lessons, with the SOTW2 chapters. I have grades 3/4 and 6 coming up. I am following closer to term 3 of SCM than the other two terms, which is also lighter in the SOTW2. If you email my yahoo, which is wherelearningabounds, I can send you a copy of my spreadsheet when I get it done. Put SOTW2 and SCM in the subject line.
wings2fly, would you be willing to share your spreadsheet with me? We are going to start SOTW2 this year and I am having a hard time figuring out how to combine it will CM books. Thanks!
