We have read the first 5 or so chapters of Story of the Romans, and I’m wondering if it gets better and I should stick it out. My kids (8, 6) have not been enjoying it, and I have to admit I haven’t either. I find it difficult to follow (the kids will ask, “Do we have to narrate, b/c I’m confused?”), and they moan when I bring the book out. There have also been several references to gods/goddesses, which we avoided a lot of the Greek stuff last year b/c of this. (We will revisit when they are older). There was also a reference to suicide.
Just curious if this gets better, if we should try Famous Men of Rome…what are your thoughts? I understand everyone has a different opinion about these things, just trying to gain some insight and others’ thoughts.
We gave up on it. I’m just having him read as many other books about Rome on his level that he enjoys and will actually learn from. We also tried Detectives in Togas, and he can’t keep all the characters straight. My son is 6, but reads on a 4th grade level, so I thought we could manage it. It just doesn’t work for him. That has meant Magic Tree House, but it works for us.
For some reason, we are really liking it. I didn’t care for The Story of the Greeks (but I really don’t like Greek history because of the gods/goddesses issue). The way the Romans book is written it’s obvious that they are fake gods. We stop and talk about what our God is like…
I agree that the book is too old for your children. I’d recommend it more for high school — there were times when I had difficulty sorting out what was what and who was who in that book. Famous Men will be an easier read than Story of the Romans, but even that might be too old for 8 and 6.
Thanks for all the feedback. I kept wondering if I was missing something. I started it b/c it was listed as a family resource, but we are going to put it back for later. I’ll try Famous Men since I have it and see how that goes. They love the Detectives in Togas. 🙂
