I have this book and am wondering how to use it…..We have nothing really planned for the next 10 weeks for science and I would like to read this to the children. They are ages 8 and 10 right now.
So do you all just read it or do you make it a nature study or do extra books along with it or what? Are there any blogs or resources out there for using this book for science study?
I read aloud to my children 1x /wk., 9 and 10, and they narrate; that’s all. They each have other books that they are reading individually for science/nature, one to narrate, the other not.
My 13yo ds at the time did written narrations from the book and my 8yo gave oral narrations. Also, I chose several passages for him to copy – mostly Uncle Pauls wisdom. Enjoy!
We just read it and then the girls go outside and try to find whatever we read about. They usually do a drawing in their sketchbook about what we’ve found that’s similar. For example, the only ants we have outside here are fire ants, so we aren’t going to examine them too closely. LOL! We read from it once a week-ish as well.
Okay, that’s easy enough 🙂 We have science 2 days a week right now, so I may just read once a week and let them continue to do their own “research” on topics that interest them on the other day. We already have narration and dictation once a week from science so that will work out great also!
Cindie,
I like your idea of making it part of our weekly nature study. This way, we could use this book for quite a long time no matter what else we may end up using for additional science studies later on. (Stay away from those fire ants LOL!!)
