We are starting with SCM in the fall and I was wondering about SW and ULW.  I will have a 2nd, 4th, and 6th grader.  The curriculum guide says for the 4th grader to start on lesson 71 of book 1 and the 6th grader to start on lesson 71 of book 2.  If they have never done SCM, should I double up (4 days a week) and start the books at lesson 1 or keep it at the suggested schedule?  I hope this makes sense!  Haha!

Your question makes perfect sense, Jennifer. I would not recommend trying to do 4 Spelling Wisdom dictation exercises each week. That would be overload. Here are a few options that come to mind.

If you wanted to, you could take a few weeks (either this summer or at the start of the fall) to orally go over the ULW lessons in the first part of the book. Those you could do every day until you get “caught up.” At that point, start including the SW dictation exercise too and back off to two lessons per week as recommended.

During that “catch up” phase, you could even choose one of the SW exercises from the week’s worth of oral lessons to assign for dictation if desired.

Another option would be to look over those beginning lessons and see if your child already knows what is presented. If so, just pick up at lesson 71.

Or you could not worry about the curriculum guide’s suggestion and just start at the beginning of the books, doing two lessons per week.

Thank you so much, Sonya!  I will definitely implement your suggestions.  I am so excited to get started with all of the wonderful resources you and SCM have made available!  Blessings to you!
