My DD will be in 5th grade in the Fall and I was thinking of starting Latin with her. I read somewhere that if a child doesn’t have a solid foundation in English Grammar then it’s best to hold off on learning Latin, is that true? I plan to start Winston Grammar with her in the Fall. However, I am wondering this because CM says to hold off on formal grammar until 5th grade or so and we have. But CM also recomends introducing Latin at this same age. So is it OK to start a formal grammar as well as Latin at the same time? Will there be any confussion in Latin because English grammar isn’t as strong yet? Would it be better to just do Winston Grammar in 5th grade and then start Latin in 6th grade? I was also thinking about maybe just having her do EftRU flashcards in 5th and start gently with that. Then do the whole language in 6th after she had a more formal grammar in 5th .
My oldest, who is in 7th grade, has never had much formal grammar. He decided he wanted to take a high school level Latin class this year, and his lack of grammar was a concern to me, particularly because I have a minor in Latin and know how challenging it can be.
What I’ve found is that the Latin has helped him with his grammar – actually he is learning Latin and grammar in that class. It hasn’t slowed him down at all. He’s almost done with the class and is maintaining a 95% average.
So, for us, his lack of grammar wasn’t an obstacle.
Before beginning Latin, a child should know the basic parts of speech, understand what a direct object is, and have a basic idea of verb tense. It doesn’t have to be deep—just having the basic idea is enough. The rest can be learned during Latin, in a way that will stick. This can be taught in a matter of a few weeks, if you haven’t already begun. Perhaps in an even shorter time.
