Since Greenleaf hasn’t released a new Famous Men for this Module yet, what would we use?

A couple of possibilities come to mind:

    1. You could forego a spine and just read the books listed.

    2. You could use TruthQuest’s volume for that time period and incorporate the books recommended there and/or the ones recommended on the SCM curriculum guide.

    3. Depending on the ages of your children, you could use the two Genevieve Foster books, “The World of Capt. John Smith” and “George Washington’s World.”

I hope others add more ideas!

My children are young (ages 7 and 9) so we just read through the books listed for Module 5, grades 1-3. They have worked just fine with out any sort of spine. I did get out my Usborne Ency. of World History for myself and took a look at the time line to be sure I knew what I was teaching 🙂 The SCM books were really self explanatory and we did not need a lot of discussion to make it all fit together (I hope that makes sense).

And I do have the TruthQuest books that would fit with modules 5 & 6. I plan to use their guides for extra ideas, but mostly stick to SCM books. Some of the TruthQuest commentary goes beyond what I want to teach about  God’s providence in our American history. I plan to read the commentary myself and just pick the books I want to read to my kids or have them read on their own.

We are in History Module 5, using TQ’s Age of Revolution I (with SOTW 3 as spine).

My oldest is 8th grade, and we didn’t use “The World of Capt. John Smith” as her spine, but we do have “George Washington’s World” … how soon would you start this? How much would you read per week? We are just now on the Mayflower/Pilgrims (perfect timing…wish I could take credit for planning so well, but it was totally by accident).

And, when you look at the Mod 5 History Overview, are the books listed in the order they should be read?

If you’re doing the books listed for 7-9 grade, you would probably want to start GWW either before or after the Autobiography of Ben Franklin. (Yes, the books are listed more or less in chronological order.) The years kind of overlap for those two. If you wanted to use GWW as a spine, you could read up through page 59, which introduces Franklin, and then go read his autobiography.

How many pages you read per week depends on whether you want to keep that book going all year and add others into the mix (for example, GWW on Mondays and Tuesdays and the other book on Thursdays), or if you want to read and stop to do another book, then read and stop, etc. Does that make sense?

Thank you Sonya. I think I will go ahead and start the book soon, and we will keep it going the rest of the year, along with adding the others in the mix.

We’re using the Truthquest Guide with SCM books for Module 5.  A wonderful mom here posted the idea to highlight SCM books in the TQ guide (the list in TQ can be overwhelming to pick from!)  This really helped to narrow things and keep us focused but not overwhelmed. It’s going great so far with my 2nd and 5th graders.  We read some together, they read some independently. History is so much more fun this year!   Blessings, Gina

    Gina,

Oh my gacious is it overwhelming! What a booklist! I love the idea of highlighting the SCM books. I thought about putting it aside, but the commentary is so, so helpful to me.

…I will probably get totally booted from this forum for admitting this…but we also use Veritas Press cards as our spine. I’ve found them very easy to CM-ize, and VP’s catalog/booklist is also very helpful (with quite a few of the same books listed as SCM and TQ). So, between our VP cards, TQ, SOTW, and SCM’s booklist…I’m spinning! I have such a wide span of ages though…5, 8, 10.5, and 13.5…I’m just trying to keep everyone covered!

Gina, maybe you could use TQ for the commentary, SCM guide for the books to be read at their own levels, SOTW could be the spine for the younger set or all of them to give them an overview  and use the VP cards as memory work.

    Hi Kathi,

I thought whoever thought of the simple highlighting idea was brilliant (except I pencil check:)  Yes, I love the TQ commentary.  I use it as a spine since my kids are younger.  Will have to check out the VP cards, my friend has them.  Thanks for mentioning, I’m sure you won’t get booted:)

It does sound challenging with your age ranges!   To keep it simple and not overwhelm myself, I pretty much just ‘checked’ the SCM books in the TQ guide.  And some movies.  I just go in order, after having assigned some books for independent reading and some for family reading.  We don’t keep a schedule, so I have yet to see if we’ll get through it all in a year—hopefully so:)   Blessings, Gina
