Has anyone used Spelling You See? I really like the looks of it, and we are using and loving Math You See.
Last year I started using Reading Lessons Thru Literature for spelling, and it’s gone really well with my oldest, but my 9yo daughter just can’t seem to remember the phonograms and rules. I’m very tempted to try SUS with her, I feel like the color coding and repitition could really help her. But then I start worrying because it doesn’t teach the rules. Lol

They teach a few rules as patterns in the younger levels. I like it, but have only used levels B and G.
I plan to use at least level G with my younger ones later.
I am going to use the Child 1st spelling kit with dd8 soon, and switch to SYS later.

Ooh, level G looks good! And it looks like just the thing for my oldest next year. He spells most words correctly, but still has trouble with changing things when adding an ending. I was thinking of having him do word roots next year, but I think I’ll have him do level G first. Is it ok to start in level G? Or should I have him do some SYS for the rest of this year?

I actually have SYS level B, my daughter did the first half last year before I dropped it in favor of cursive Copywork. I pulled the second book out and I’m going to have her do it. Looking at the placement test, I don’t think she’s ready for level C yet.

SYS suggests starting before G, but my dd started with it last year and did well. She enjoyed it.

I’m thinking my son will be ok because he does have practice with these sort of skills. This year he is doing RLTL level 3 (soon to start level 4) and Copywork and dictation from ELTL 3. So, he’s used to having a new Copywork and/or dictation passage every day. I do have him study the dictation passage first and he usually spells everything correctly. His Copywork seems a similar length to SYS, but his dictation is shorter. RLTL uses a different marking system, but it too uses markings to help them ‘see’ the word. Looking at the sample of level G, I definitely think he could do it.
I will have to figure out whether he still needs cursive Copywork, or if just having him do his ELTL work (I would drop the Copywork and dictation, since that’s covered in SYS) in cursive is enough. How long do they still need that perfect example to copy to keep their cursive nice looking?
Now that I’m using SYS with my middle to kids, I considered switching my oldest right now too, but he’s doing fine as he is so I don’t think I will. Besides I would hate having half of a level leftover. 😀

I’m no expert, but I would think that if he is still using cursive at least once a day, that that would be enough.

My 6yo has been doing SYS level A but its too easy, he can already spell these. So after looking thru my daughters old level B book I decided to bump him up a level. Then he’ll have Copywork. I’m tempted to go ahead and order levels C and G while I’m at it to save on shipping. Let’s hope I don’t change my mind later. 😀

We are using SYS A and B between my 3 older ones. My oldest (9.5) has some auditory processing issues and it took me a while to figure out what was going on (I really wish children came with manuals!). When he was younger we struggled a LOT with phonics and learning to read. He was frustrated, I was frustrated. I cried more than once and felt like a total failure as a mom/teacher. My MIL was quick to point out that when he was 5 or 6 he didn’t know the short ‘i’ sound in Sunday school – rub salt in those wounds, huh? I finally had the realization that we homeschool for the flexibility and so we stopped for a while and in that time he learned to read. He flew after that, reads beautifully now which is shocking given the auditory issues. Spelling though? Terrible. Couldn’t spell the simplest of 3 letter words even at 8 years old. Ugh. We tried a number of different programs to no avail. Then I learned of Spelling You See and it looked perfect. I read reviews, watched videos, spent a lot of time going back and forth (because I didn’t want to spend more money on another curriculum only for it to not work either, you know?). DH finally said “Just order it! Have you ordered it yet? When’s the new spelling stuff coming?” Etc…
Fast forward several months… he’s spelling. He’s actually spelling!! I just can’t believe it… He started in book B because that was definitely the level he needed (they have some samples on their website for placement – pretty much if your child can do this section accurately with X amount or fewer misspelled then order book X). Him and his 7 year old sister are only a week apart in their lessons. He’s into 5 letter words and is getting ready to move into shorter passages for dictation. The content is young for him, but the skill level is just what he needs. The look on his face was priceless when I pointed out how far he had come in just a few weeks. I gave him a big hug. Short vowel sounds are still a big issue, but I think he’s better able to visualize the words now. He’s even gained enough confidence to try and spell words he doesn’t know. I don’t know what we would have done or where he would be if we hadn’t started with SYS…

Oh, and for my 5 year old with speech issues A has helped break downs words and sounds – she has come a LONG way with pronunciation since starting. I know that’s not specific to this program, but it has helped.

I wonder if my daughter has some problem like that. She certainly struggled with learning to read. AAR was a big help for her. At 8 she couldn’t spell three letter words either. I felt like her spelling did improve last year, but maybe it was doing the first half of SYS level b last year and not RLTL. I hadn’t thought of that till now.
