We are using it for my ODS is in 1st grade. We are doing Jack and Jill and he really likes it. I plan on using the next level, Wild Tales, for 2nd grade and then going to Spelling Wisdom for 3rd grade.
We were trying a more intensive spelling/reading program (tried Spell to Write and Read and then Reading Lessons through Literature) but the memorizing of phonics was not working for him. With Spelling U See he is learning the phonics, but learning to see them in the word, instead of just memorizing them. It seems to work much better for his learning style.
My only issue is that it is all in print. Which makes sense for when you mark the “chunks”. I don’t mind for the first 3 levels, because it is not as much writing; but I printed off the 4th level for my DD (3rd grade, who is using SW this year) to try out and the passages were longer and she did not like printing, she wanted to write in cursive, but then to mark the “chunks” was not as easily done. Just not as “visible” if that makes sense. It could easily take the place of copy work, which would combine spelling and copy work which is nice.
I have been very happy with it and my ODS has never complained about completing a lessons. He is learning and the spelling practice is improving his reading. As he is building words it is building his confidence in reading.
I also like that the lessons are short. 10 – 15 minutes maximum. It also says in the teacher guide to set time. Tell the child to copy for 5 minutes and if they are not done, just stop. Or dictate words for 5 minutes and if you don’t finish that is fine, just stop. I appreciate that because it doesn’t make us feel like we have to do everything, but it seems because that relaxed attitude my ODS seems to want to finish everything and happy to do it.
Thank you so much for your replies! I am so glad to hear the positive reviews- it is so helpful. It sounds like something my second grader and first grader would enjoy and learn lots from! Thank you again.
I would suggest printing off the samples to try. It gives a full week of work, so you can easily see if it is a good fit. That is what I did this past fall. A nice way to try it out.
