My son is a natural speller. I’ve been having him do Spelling Wisdom but am wondering if it is a good use of his time. He has never had trouble spelling words-he seems them once in a book he’s reading and just remembers them. He is almost 14 and in 9th grade.

This past week he did lesson 51 in book 5. The only words he didn’t know were avarice, Bibbiena and sentimentalism.

Is it time to have him stop spelling and work on something else during this time?

    Thanks!

Can he also do the punctuation correctly?  How about all the grammar–can he diagram the sentences?  If you don’t need them any longer for spelling, use them to work on other skills.  I discontinue teaching spelling when it becomes apparent my kids can spell nearly everything I can–once you have the “trick” of word visualizing and sufficient practice, then you do it automatically and there’s no real need to “teach” words.  But I don’t discontinue dictation until it is apparent that the child also knows the grammar and punctuation easily as well.
